I did briefly experiment with recording at 88.2kHz, but didn't find the difference that noticeable. In terms of the question being asked, my experience is that 24 bits is better than 16 bits. After that, the benefits for higher sample rates and bit depth start to diminish.
Never tried converting red book (44.1 16bit) files to DSD 64; there may be some benefit to that as it may sound more liquid, natural, and analog like.
