"The feedback has been tremendous," Odyssey's Klaus Bunge told us, speaking of his new Art On-Wall loudspeakers. These two-way, ported wall-hanging flat speakers utilize ScanSpeak drivers in framed, shallow, rectangular enclosures. The grille-cloth is laser printed to resemble works of art, many by German artists of Klaus' acquaintance. There are two stereo models, the $1500/pair Canvas 1 and the $1950/pair Canvas High End—as well as a Canvas Center at $1200.

Klaus built a special MDF wall to demonstrate the Canvas line and we thought they sounded pretty impressive, with lots of bass and depth. Depth? From on-walls? That surprised the heck out of us, but there you are.

"Of course, they are not intended to replace an audiophile's primary system—but, with these, if you can't have speakers on the floor, that doesn't mean you can't have good sound."

We'd close with a joke. but then we'd have to decide between "a sound investment" and "works of art that work," and frankly, we're tired and just not that clever. Instead, we'll close with a picture—they're said to be worth a thousand words, which effectively doubles the length of this report.

I met Klaus today and heard his room and he made me eat my words stating that his Odyssey electronics were not the best on vocals.  Of course, I should have tempered my original statement, by stating that I heard the Odyssey gear in a system that was not all odyssey/groenberg, so it was not as Klaus normally voices it at his place.  Anyway, I was quite impressed with the system at the show, especially getting to hear Odyssey as it was meant to be heard- with Odyssey Lorelei speakers.  I'd still take Naim/Neat for rock music, but the Odyssey was extremely good for rock and certainly more balanced to play more types of music- like vocals, classical for instance.  I honestly can't think of anything that offers as much performance for the dollar than the system he had assembled at HE 2005 (some interconnects cost more than the entire system he was showing).  The amps can basically run any speaker and the Loreleis were extremely musical.  In addition, the in-walls sounded so good many thought that it was the Lorelei's playing.  Nice to meet you, Klaus.

I also heard the pictures today and they were quite impressive.

Will they replace your main speakers?  As Klaus said - NO!

Were they way better than previous in walls I have heard? - YES!!

Not only did the pictures have a full range sound we have come to expect from Klaus' speakers, but they also had pretty good imaging, air, and front to back depth.

When you factor in that you can pretty much have any picture you want put on the canvas and that there are no construction issues to deal with, I think Klaus has hit a homerun with these speakers.

Let's see, how about a pair of pictures flanking a plasma?

Lastly, it is always a pleasure to spend some time talking to Klaus.

I happen to make the trip up from Charlotte, NC to check out the show. Kudos to Klaus on his room.

The attention to detail paid off. The room looked and sounded great. I have never heard his products before but I have to say that my father and I were very impressed at the price to performance ratio. Great sounding system for what it would cost you for a power cord in most of the rooms there.

Anyone thinking of buying in this price range should quit thinking start listening :!:

The other nice thing about Klaus's room was that he played real music that people actually like and was not afaid to crank it up or as he referred to it "Now we will go nuts". You have got to love that

With his accent it reminded me of Arnold in Pumping Iron.

Klaus- Congratulations on a killer room :!:

Just got back from NY and got to spend some time with Klaus on Friday.   Good sound and good times, as usual.   :D

The Odyssey room was a lot of fun, and Klaus is a total madman for building and wallpapering a 1 inch-thick MDF wall (complete with fireplace  :o ) that practically covered the back wall of his hotel demo room!  The effect was incredible, 'though, and it was the perfect way to show off the new on-wall speakers.   (It was a blast to watch people walk into the room and immediately fix onto the Loreleis, then become confused when they realized the sound wasn't coming from down there).

I think the message connected with a lot of people - you can get good sound without giving up your room to your HT or stereo system.  Sure, it's not quite as good as what you'd get if you're willing to sacrifice your room to the music (like most of us crazies around here ;) ), but you don't have to settle for Bose (or deal with in-walls) if you're not willing to make that sacrifice.

Thanks for another great show, Klaus!

Nice job Klaus on that wall....and a fireplace ....good for marshmellows... [/list:u]Just wanted to say thanks Klaus for an excellent demo !! He ran the on wall speakers thru a few tunes to show depth, soundstage, ect... (vocal, chant and Stanley Clark cuts)...then he handed me the remote and said "go crazy, have some fun"...and I did....
I was very impressed with the speakers....2 ways... sounding so good hanging on a wall. And with the option of adding any picture into the frame (high quality laser printing on an artist's canvas)....its a great idea !!! He has two model's and a center speaker....good idea for the HT crowd. [/list:u]
Good luck with them Klaus and thanks for the excellent demo....I enjoyed it very much. Have a good trip home !![/list:u]

Is there a website with details about the on-walls?  They might be a good option for a friend of mine.

The website hasn't been updated in some time. Best thing to do is call Klaus in the late afternoon or  evening hours at (317) 299-5578.

HE2005 was much smaller this year but as bad as the show was here in NY, I managed to still have a good time. One of the highlights for me at the show was spending time in the Odyssey room and seeing Klaus again. I must say the on-wall speakers that Klaus demonstrated were quite well recieved by many people at the show. The demo was really good and I heard many positive comments about them. People were quite amazed at the performance of these speakers and once again, Klaus seems to have done a fantastic job with them-I personally have never heard "paintings" sound that great.   I have heard other models from manufacturers but they always seemed to be missing something sonically. Not the case with the Odyssey line of on-walls though. :D They were very dynamic and a real treat even on 2 channel material.
I must say that Klaus is very dedicated to his trade. When I talked to him, he told me what exactly was involved with setting up the room for the show. He drove down to NY with the Rover packed to the hilt and in fact, had to pick up additional equipment at the airport in Long Island.
He had to make special trips to LI just to pick up the 600Lb false wall/fireplace to display his new product. He then spent all night-almost 11 hours constructing and putting up the wall by himself.....talk about dedication! :banghead:
He was quite tired the last day of the show so I offered to help him break down after it was all over. He took me up on it but had to first pack away some equipment with his good friend (Bob?) and drive out to Long Island to drop the stuff off at the airport. He picked me up at 11pm and we went out to eat because the poor guy was starving as he had not eaten all day. We got back to the hotel at around 12:30 and started packing the leftover equipment. I really began to appreciate all the hard work on his part because of the amount of stuff he had to set up for such a show. There were at least 30 different cables that had to be packed along with many miscellaneous items.....At about 1 am we started tearing down the wall all the whilst being entertained by Klaus's stories on the industry and his personal experiences. It took us almost 3 hours to pack away the equipment and tear down that bloody wall. We had to get rid of the wood and luckily we were able to dump it on the same floor in the service area as per the hotels instructions. The elevator was packed full of equipment and we then proceeded to put it all in his Rover. By the way, the idiotic parking attendants at the hotel smashed the front-end of his car into a pole doing a couple of thousand dollars worth of damage!
Let me tell you, that Rover was packed to the hilt and we had a hard time closing the door.  As tired as he was, he insisted that we at least have a drink and proceeded to do just that. He finally left the hotel at 3:30 AM to drive an hour and a half back to LI. From what I understand, he had to drive back out to LI to the hotel he was staying at in order to send the other equipment he had since the cargo station at the airport was already closed the first time he got there! Poor Klaus had to unpack his over stuffed Rover just to put the air cargo stuff back in the next morning! Then he had to repack the car and drive all the way back to Indiana the in the afternoon. That my friends, is true dedication! :thumb:
Klaus, you are a true gentleman and a scholar and I would like to thank you for putting on a great display at the Odyssey room. I was more than glad to help you even though it was into the wee hours of the morning. Yes, I was a wreck the next day, but nevertheless, I must say it was a pleasure spending time with you and was very glad to help you. Without hesitation, your effort earns you the award for hardest working man in audio show business!

Did anyone catch what type of turntable Klaus was rocking at the show?  I know the arm was the kick ass SME V with a Van Den Hul cartridge (not sure which one), but I didn't catch what type of turntable it was placed on.  Regardless, the vinyl rig in his room was very good and, as usual, beat the digital source under the show conditions.

If it was a creme colored table, it would be his "smaller" Symphonic Line.

Yes, it was a creme colored table w/the SME arm mounted on it.  It had a plinth and the motor looked to be mounted to the side either on or near the plinth.
