New Member Introduction

Hello Members,

I'm a long-time Hi-Fi enthusiast who started building Knight-kit components in the early '60s . . . Scott kits soon followed.  A thesis in architectural acoustics led to an R&D career in underwater acoustics.  Now truly retired with a fully equipped shop (including a large CNC router), a continuing love of the "old school" speakers, and a new house (under construction and wired for Dolby Atmos) with dedicated sound rooms (yes, more than one) I have enjoyed what Danny is preaching over the past few months.

Equipment inventory has grown over the years--the first McIntosh components were added in 1967 (C22) with the collection now containing more than 20 units.  The LP collection has grown steadily over the years to over 4,000 disks.  There are several very nice turntables--the most notable being an Oracle Delphi with Sure SME arm.  Speakers include many pairs of Klipsch and Altec/Lansing--the old school models capable of producing serious volume velocity.  Living in the NW, Speaker Lab was frequently visited so there are several sets of their offerings including a prototype pair of true line arrays (with subwoofer).  It's a long story, but a full surround set of Martin Logans grace the living room of our principle residence.

For the new house--we call it EAGLEROCK--I have a pair of Klipschorns, a pair of Altec 816LF bins with 311 horns, and a series of Klipsch KG models to mess around with.  BUT . . . I also have "in inventory" an X-Voce kit that will be auditioned as a center channel for the surround stage.  I'm quite interested in servo subs--Danny's tease of the "Beast" has my attention.

Hello,

The request to post photos of the Khorns and Altecs might be best handled like eating an elephant . . .  I'm limited since I'm four weeks on a new knee so can't access the "lab" right now and there are two houses with many of the speakers residing at EAGLEROCK.  But here's a start:

First a shot of the EAGLEROCK Project.

We were lucky enough to purchase three contiguous properties on the Columbia River--Priest Lake (above the Priest Rapids Dam) is just visible to the right of the structure.  We are self-building in four phases--two of which are in place here.  Since the skies are very dark (Army Training Grounds across the river) one of the objectives was to house our several telescopes--the pyramidal roof is temporary until the rotating dome is placed.  In the background is Umtanum Ridge--the property is at about 530 feet about sea level--the highest ridge peaks are over 4,000 feet.  Yakima (WA) is beyond the ridge.  Weather is typical of "high desert" locations.

Here's the "sound room" of Phase I when it was the "cabinet shop".  The K-horns are in use (in this shot still on dollies--the corner windows are located so the top of speakers is at sill height.  The center channel above the left red tool chest is a Klipsch SS-3.  Hidden behind the ladder is an Altec 816 bass bin as a subwoofer.  A pair of Klipsch KG3.5s are in use for the surround speakers.  All powered using a McIntosh MC7106 amp.

Here's a similar shot to the above with the insulation, drywall, and Sapele paneling in place.  The Birch center panel on the wall is the mounting board for the 75" Samsung TV.  The black garbage bags cover a pair of Klipsch KG5.5s in use while the paint and trim work is addressed.  The routed panels contain the traces for the PEX in-floor heat tubing--there are 98 of them.  Of note in this shot are the two "motif panels" that bracket the TV.  The motif used throughout the project is adapted from Frank Lloyd Wright's Hollyhock House (Pasadena, CA).  The mount boards at the column bottoms are ready for KG .5 components that will be driven by the TV's amp(s) so decent sound it possible absent turning on the "big system".

One more shot for this installment . . . here is the pair of La Scalas being prepared for transfer to a friend's listening room.  A McIntosh MC2100 and a C28 went along as together they sound fantastic.  Don't judge me on the "Motel 6" carpet squares . . . they came out of another of our houses and with rubber backing are fantastic padding for shipping.

More on the collection when I can . . .
