Allow me to introduce myself, a new member

Hi Everyone,

Happy to be joining you in the Circle, from Rhode Island, US.  I am here because I would like to put together a decent home listening system.  I do not wish to spend my limited funds unwisely, so I thought it would be good to chat with folks who know more than I do and are willing to share their experience.  Again, happy to be here!

  • To whom more was given more will be required.
    • Never go to a psychiatrist, adopt a straycat or dog. On the street they live only two years average.

Welcome to AC   :thumb:
Do a favor to your wallet and your time, dont make the mistakes I do:
1) Dont buy low efficiency speaker, below 98dB.
2) Dont buy 4 ohms speakers.
3) Dont buy 3-ways speakers, prefer Full Range driver crossoverless speakers or at least a simple 2-ways speakers (in this case use a coaxial driver, dont walk run from top tweeters).
4) With a 100dB sensitivity and bening 8 ohms impedance will allow you use a inexpensive sweet small integrated tube amp.
5) Boxed loudspeakers are necessary only to made bass, if possible use a OB speaker.
6) Famous brands means high profit margin paid by the client.
As always IMO.

DIY project from a member:
Eminence Alpha15A + 4.7mH + Visaton B200.

Decware OB with the Lii Audio F15 driver:

If one have a woodworker is possible try the Lii Audio F15($399/Pair, pair not each) 97dB/8Ω and benign impedance curve suited to OB or Bass Reflex box or the F18($540/pair), no Crossover, no Tweeter beaming, no Phase rotation, no driver sensitivity loss, no Harmonics loss, no Retail price.

Welcome!

Suggest active monitors, starting with JBL 305 Mk2 or Kali LP-6 and couple to a BlueSound Node to allow CD quality streaming of millions of albums from subscription services like Qobuz or Tidal.  Good room filling sound for under $1000 USD.

I will neither corroborate nor contradict what my esteemed friends have said above; you may find that there are as many opinions here as there are people.  However, there is a rich used market for quality hifi equipment that should not be overlooked when budget is a concern (and for whom is it not?).  usaudiomart.com can provide a wide variety of options, and hifishark.com is a great aggregate search and history tool for locating equipment.  They are both good starting points.

Good luck in your endeavors!
