Hello from New Zealand!
« on: 10 Jul 2023, 09:54 am »
I've been into music since my teens and in 1995 was 21. Somewhere along the way I sold my hifi stuff moving from the UK to Australia in 2000- then again moving to New Zealand in 2007. In 2018 I decided to get into vintage hifi and got a turntable for the first time. Fortunately the price increase had not hit yet and I managed to build a really nice library including some first pressings from the 90s! Last year I turned my attention more to CD's as I got another setup for my photography studio minus a turntable. It plays 5 disks and so good to just press play. So at home I listen to both CD's and vinyl and CD's exclusively in my work space.

Regardless of medium I'm listening to music for a large part of my day that includes headphones on my daily walks or Apple AirPods on my mountain bike rides. I really love finding new bands or remembering ones I used to listen to in the 90's/ 2000's. My tastes are varied but mostly range from 90's grunge and electronica to modern indi and dance. Love me some Nick Cave too. I'm not really into classical but do love some jazz and blues too. I'm pretty open to listening to all sorts of music though and just recently discovered a band called Pigs X7 and the viagra boys that I really like. If it's full of passion or angst and makes the hairs stand up- I'm into it. A recent discovery is a 90's electronic band called Jam & Spoon from Germany and one record Tripomatic Fairytales has made it into my top 5. Holy shit it's a masterpiece.

As mentioned I'm a commercial photographer here in Christchurch New Zealand over here: https://christchurchphotographer.co.nz

Personal work here too: https://paulpetch.com (mostly shot on 1950's film cameras- I love old stuff!)

I often post stuff about my hifi at my instagram too here: https://www.instagram.com/oneeightygram/

Here are some photos of my (current) home setup. I do like to buy cheap vintage stuff and swap it out to see if it improves the listening experience. I've got a few unitise the garage waiting to be repaired. Since 2018 nothing has come close to my $50 Sanyo 2003 amp. It's a great hobby.

I'll post my studio setup in the next days.

($350?) Sansui speakers from late 60's. Not sure about history but look to be original inside and out. I soldered speaker cables direst to crossover that improved the sound so much! Lovely lows - good mids- and clear highs. Sibilance on vinyl was a tad annoying- and CD's would be a bit hot sometimes - but these issues were resolved with a cheap cable swap.

($50 - and $120 recap) Sanyo JA2003 amp 1984? Cheap but the sound is insane. Recapped to balance out the speaker outputs- that were a minor issue but now resolved.

$80) Yamaha CDX -450 Cd player + Remote. 1991? A recent purchase that replaced an early 2000's Denon mediocre CD player. The separation with this unit is brilliant and I do love a remote :) My other CD player is a Yamaha too. I like the balanced sound that Yamaha players produce. Not the amps though- to flat.

Project Debut Record Master 2021 with Ortofon 2M Red. ($1000). Opted for this new turntable due to multlple failures of vintage ones prior. This was before I knew of a talented repair man! It's great but does have issues with mild buzzing that is fixed once the needle drops. I do miss having a fully automatic record player TBH as it was nice to sit back and not have to get up every 15 minutes. It sounds great.

Hi,

Welcome to Audiocircle and what a great first post :).

I live in Perth, Western Australia, and I'm also into vinyl as well.

Wifey and I cruised New Zealand earlier this year and wasn't as much fun as I'd hoped for.  100 kph winds for 3 days kept us from docking at one port.  And I got lost during one of the excursions (cloudy weather and north/south orientation confused me).  But the nice ladies at a flower shop got me back to wifey/travel guide.  The threat of earthquakes was another downer.
