Any reccomendations for a good sounding sub to pair with vmps 626r's that I can attempt to build as my first speaker building project?  I can get help, so if it's a little tougher, that's OK too.

Thanks!

My XLS sub is available in kit form, with cabinet plans, etc.  Drivers with hardware start at $233 per channel.

Rosconey is right, the VMPS subs are excellent and very low priced for what you get. The kits are fairly easy to assemble too.

Just my opinion but a TC Sounds or Peerless XLS 12" will be better for music then a VMPS sub.

Check out the Peerless at the post above or www.oaudio.com/ for a combo TC Sounds 12 with amp. In a 60 liter sealed box the TC Sounds is hard to beat.

Never said it was about specs. Am I not allowed to recommend something other than VMPS?

Can anyone here offer an opinion on the Rythmik servo subs?

There's some interesting thinking gone into this design though the name isn't mentioned too often when the topic of subs comes up.

If you like small business, Rythmik is it.  Brian Ding is basically a one man operation as far as I could tell when I visited him for my plate amp.  Unfortunately, he was busy packing with his family for a trip at the time so I was unable to hear his servo sub.

Speaking of Subwoofers...  I had the pleasure of hearing two Paradigm Reference Servo 15 in action.  Its my opinion that sealed subs with servo is the way to go for "musicallity"...  I always wondered if I could build my very own servo sub.  Is there such a kit out there? or maybe the servo technology can be added on seperatelly with another type of sub kit?  Does anyone out there know of a DIY project that incorporates servo technology?  Thanks  :)

Do a search, you'll find references here and at

Add Adire's new Rava and Sadhara to your list of subs. If you want musical, I would go with BESL's XLS.

i lurked on the diy bass list for almost two years, determined to get the best bass for the lowest price - lowest hz, lowest distortion, highest spl's, most musical.  (this was for music; i don't watch movies.)  i also went & listened to some commercial offerings.  vmps, velodyne, m&k.  i ended up buying a pair of vmps larger subwoofers.  at the end of the day, i had determined that, even if i went diy, i couldn't approach the overall sound quality of subs i got, for anywhere near the price.

this was ten years ago.  i believe the same is true today, tho some of the kits may have gotten closer, for the $$$...  and, vmps also offers kits, which means you can get even *more* bang-for-buck.   if the vmps larger is too big, then check out their original & smaller.  also, i recommend getting two, vs one, for music.  if price/size is a consideration, i would get two originals, instead of one larger, for example....

another reason why vmps is better, imo, is if you go passive, you will get far better overall sound w/outboard active x-overs, which will be far more transparent than the x-over electronics installed in most powered subs.  of course, many powered subs *do* offer decent electronics, like those in the top line velodynes, rels, etc.  but, at ~four times the overall system costs...
