as some of you may have read, I recently have been working on upgrading my RM40s. I am doing 3 things, upgrading the midwoofer, upgrading to FST and moving the lower two panels up so that they are tight c-t-c spacing, & vitrifying the woofers.

Well I did all the baffle work for both speakers, but I only changed out the one speaker at a time.  One is the original way I had it and the other is upgraded per above.  I then hooked both back up and using the remote balance function of my Perreaux (this integrated rocks, I am going to seriously miss it) I was able to try each speaker one at a time and panning back and forth during the tracks, also listening to the same parts of the tracks on both speakers.

#1 the high frequencies are SO much better with the FST and the whole presentation gained clarity and openness.  The other sounded nasally in comparison.  There is also a slightly higher tweeter level maybe at the old settings.
#2 you definitely need to take a LOT of putty off when doing the MW upgrade.  I am serious, without doing this all is different in the bass department.  There is seemingly 2.5x the bass in the original vs the new with the same putty setting (tuned for original).  This is simply due to the new being far too damped at the original setting.

Obviously I have some tunings to do and need to now do the second RM40 but thought I'd write this interesting non-scientific experiment I did this afternoon.

I mostly used the first two tracks off Morphine - Cure for Pain.  It has good vocals and deep vocals which test out the lower midrange, a baritone sax that when solo's gets up in to the upper mids as well, lots of good hi-hat symbol and an upright bass.

Josh, did you vitrify the PR yet?  If not, I'd hold off on re-adjusting the putty just yet.  The vitrified PR's do for the low bass about the same thing the new midwoofer does for the upper bass....

Swapping RM40 woofer locations?
What is the consensus of my suggestion years ago to swap the RM40 woofer locations: midbass goes downtown, lowbass goes uptown (OEM is opposite).

The suggested placement minimizes the ceiling bounce of the midrange output from the midbass driver.  You'd be surprised at the midrange extension of that midbass with the OEM first order slope.  The effect of the OEM siting, in my room, was of a blurring effect & shift of the image up toward the ceiling, when the music content concentrated in that particular range from the midbass (male vocals, etc).

Jim,

I didn't do the mid W/low W swap.   I have 12' ceilings and sit only 10' back so ceiling bounce isn't an issue in my room.

I did vitrify the PR when I did the upgrades....   However, later on last night after getting back from going to dinner with our neighbors I noticed a small pile of yellow insulation laying in the corner.  It then dawned on me that I forgot to put the insulation back after I was done working on the xo's.  DOH!

So, I totally take back what I said about the bass being different or lower in output.  This would account for a lot of that.
