Do OB subs need to burn/run in?
« on: 29 Apr 2023, 01:53 pm »
I have the Double Trouble subs from GR and wanted to know if the subs need to burn/run in like the studios do? I did a quick search but I could not find an answer. The reason I ask is, I did not allow the subs to run when I ran the studios in and they seem to be changing (could be my imagination). I have had to turn the volume down on the sub amp several times to keep the SPL balanced with the studios. Sorry for the odd question.

Thank you, Kelly

Yes, more than any other speaker. The drivers are very stiff new and output is extremely off. Plus the amp also needs burn in.

Thank you, that could explain it!

I would give the woofers a good 50 hours of break-in by playing deep brown noise or even 20Hz sine waves to exercise the suspension.

When I bought my first sealed servo sub I hooked it up to my receiver and while everything was working, I got almost no output.  I could just barely feel the woofer move.  But I played noise through it.  After about an hour I started seeing more movement and hearing some output.  An hour later I started hearing the walls of my apartment vibrating.  Eventually it reached full break-in.  Even just a single servo sub is a monster.

My OB subs were less dramatic breaking in but it also took me longer to get the settings right.

I've owned OB servo subs for over a decade and I'm still fiddling with the settings!!! :o

It feels like it could be a rabbit hole sometimes! But I feel like they are dialed in best I can. The output just keeps getting stronger and I continue to turn it down a bit to balance it out. Thank you everyone for your responses, very helpful.
