What cartridge for Cornet2?
« on: 22 Apr 2005, 01:07 pm »
What's everyone using? I bought a used Goldring Eroica and it's just not cutting it for voices. Female vocals are sibilant, almost like radio static. Spent hours of adjusting alignment,VTA, weight, etc. It could be defective. Anyway I took it out and  tried a $30 Shure last night-Just eyeballed it in, now the voices are nice, and sound real, but I lost detail in everything else, as expected! So I'm in the market for around $350. Shure, Dynavector, or Sumiko Bluepoint Evo3? Any ideas are appreciated.

I will go with Ortofon. Whatever you can find within your budget. Good luck.

I'm running a Shure V15VxMR.  Works and sounds great, although I haven't compared it to other similarly priced or higher priced carts...  I have zero issues with tracking, sibilance, etc.  They used to sell for $199 - not sure if you can still get one for that...  good luck...

Benz Micro ACE-Medium (0.8mV) loaded with 1.2K ohms with my Cornet Classic (having the CCS upgrade and the 370BX tranny).
This dude tracks perfectly and is not too sensitive to VTA and azimuth settings.  I use 2.25 grams VTF on my unipivot tonearm (VPI Scout).
Some might think the Cornet needs a higher output cart but my downstream components have adequate gain to compensate.  It only works because my Cornet is essentially hum-free.  I use well-shielded interconnects too.

Hi,

I have also tried the Eroica and I was not impressed, it is sibilant and not all that detailed either. I am afraid that many lower priced MC cartridges exhibit this trait. One that may be worth trying is the Dyanavector 10X5 I have had great results with it in the past,

Or if you can find a used Clearaudio Virtuoso Wood, retail is $800 but you can probably find one for $400 or less with low hours, now this is a great cartridge and it's a moving magnet so very easy to mate with any phono stage.
This cartridge has it all, detail, smoothness, high end extension with no sibilance at all, it is also very good at recreating the original space of the recording.... ambience retreival is excellent. It's not that cheap but it it has often been compared to MC cartridges in the $2000 range!
