How long since you've been out of audio?  In recent years CD quality streaming has become very popular and active monitors (low voltage crossover with one channel of amplification per driver) have also gained traction.  Streaming allows remote access to millions of albums for just a monthly fee.  Active monitors are compact for given bass output, have more dynamics, greater detail, and don't require speaker cable.

Thanks!  I was into audio when I was a teenager about 43 years ago. A lot has changed. I listened to my dad’s system consisting of a Dynaco PAS3 preamp, Dynaco Stereo 120 amp, Acoustic Research AR-3a speakers, Dual 1019 turntable and an Ampex 1100 reel to reel.

Since then, I have transitioned from vinyl to CD’s and now only stream music. I recently have had active speakers but I am back to passive speakers.
