I have found one of the best, easiest, and most cost effective methods to start is building a known pre-designed kits.  There are numerous people here offering them and you'll have fun and enjoy the excellent results!  Without some experience, designing something from the ground up can end up with frustrating results.  But you might pick up a copy of:
