Can this Noob DIY a new home theater?
« on: 13 Jan 2023, 01:43 am »
About an hour ago I discovered that DIY even exists for speakers... now I'm wondering if DIY is for me, and if it can work for the large-ish home theater we're designing now...

Gonna have whole-home audio as well (I think)... my A/V guy will have a crazy reaction if I tell him about DIY, but the GR-Research videos that got me here are pretty compelling!

I have a lot of questions that are pretty basic, so I look forward to having my forum 'training wheels' removed so I can search for the basics... :)

Thanks in advance for any future guidance for my home and home theater!!

If you are willing to learn, and make the odd mistake here and there, the answer is yes. The speaker in the thread I'm linking is no longer available, but it will give you an idea of what is involved. Search "build" and you will get an avalanche of results. Have fun along the journey, and do plenty of research and ask a lot of questions.

Best of luck,

I'd also say the answer is yes... which doesn't mean much since I don't know you or your skill level.  But I think "I" could do it... and if I can do it then anyone can.

For building a theater, or speakers, I would guess the biggest thing is time management.  It would be easy to guess you could complete the project in 3 to 6 months.  But if you're anything like me then you have a job, a spouse, a house with a yard, pets, friends, etc.  Lots of things that eat into your time.  I recently built a set of GR Research speakers - I guessed I'd complete them in a month.  Over a year later and I'm actually enjoying them now.

Your project will probably grow too.  Things you don't think of initially will definitely come up.

I'm a designer, so I would definitely recommend a plan.  Floor plan as well as execution plan (i.e. phases).  Be prepared for it to change as you go.  Ha ha.

Take pictures, keep us posted and the best of luck to you.

Yes you definitely can. As well as searching here, go to diyaudio.com for more diy oriented content.

Thanks everyone, for the encouragement!

I just had a call with GRR, and it looks like the high-end NX line is really for two-channel audio and not well suited for a home theaters, especially with the open baffles, 3-foot from walls requirement, etc. (not great for little ones who may be crawling around them!).

So, I'm now leaning toward his recommendation of smaller (and cheaper), fully enclosed models that make more sense for multi-channel listening.

I love the value proposition of DIY for getting big sound without big money, and I wish GRR had a page that was dedicated to home theater applications, like mine. Right now I'm looking at two front speakers, one center, four rears, and up to four subs in the corner of the theater, two with 12" woofers and two with 15" (we really want the bass!).

Any other recommended reading, for applications like this? I'm guessing there's forum circles dedicated to this stuff that I can find... the amount of info here is certainly intimidating for a noob...

As I see it , DIY has a lot of fun with audio, while if they want to improve the units they made, which need much more time and perseverance
