CDPlayers for about $$500 or under.

Hi all, Well, ... On the search for a CDP for under $500. Now, I don't know how to setup the two box aproach, (dac and transport) so I thought I'd stick to the one box aproach and also, keep the WAF acceptance high. So if you have heard a bunch of the stuff like the Cambridge 640, the Shenling (yeah I know not spelled right) and others I might have missed, let me know. I told my wife I wanted to spend $500 on a CDPlayer, and she doubled over with laughter. I told her, like anything good, it isn't cheap.

The Onix 88 sold by AV123 is the same as a Music Hall Cd 25 for half the money. You can get them from AV123 right now for 300. It's a chinese cd player and has a good following in the price range. A Sony 2000es at 400 list and less than 300 on Ebay is also a very good idea.

I have heard people say the Cambridge Azure 540 for about the same price, or just a little more, is better. Rosconey would like to hear more about that player you got.

I have a Rega Planet that I am not using right now. It wasn't for sale but I would consider selling it.

It was $795. new.

It was the cheapest CD player to make Stereophile's class "B" list at the time. The next cheapest was $3,000.

It's a nice players and it plays everything, CDR's, CDRW's...

I have seen them used in the $450. range.

The unit is a least 4 years old, but in great condition.

I'd take $425. for it.

Hi, Well, that's true, a totally different presentation so I am told. More warm and not as analytical as the Cambridge, but still worthy to consider. Thanks.

Ray, you might want to check out the JVC XV-N512S or XV-N510.
These players use the same brand of DAC that the ART DIO uses.
They will read most types of video memory storage mediums and play
DVD-A as well. For about $100 you won't be over invested in a playback machine that may soon be obsolete. Don't be afraid to pay less for good sound.

Hi Scotty, Are these just CDPlayers or little minisystems? what is the difference between the two units?

Hi Ray,

I think danny was selling his modwright level perpetual technologies p3a for a similiar price. I know you indicated you didn't want a dac but at the price no one box cdp is going to beat it.

Another to consider is he is selling is bolder modded mensa dac which apparently is also good.

Ray, these are players only. The model number reflects the case color
only,512S is silver 510 is black, go figure. If you can buy one of them from one of the big chains you can break it in for 2 weeks and return it if you think
you wasted your C note. Most of the big chains have a 30day return policy no questions asked if you keep your receipt. They sound better on darumas with about 3.75lbs of lead shot in a ziplock baggie on top with a qtr. sheet of ERS paper underneath the shot.

Don't rule out good DVD players for your CD playback. Some are quite good and even better when modded. I use a Alex Peychev modified Pioneer DV-563a and it was pretty close for CD playback to my Thule CD player used as a transport with a Benchmark DAC1. It wasn't quite as good but the difference was not enough for me to keep my higher priced gear. My opinion is that due to the volume of sales involved, DVD players will offer more bang for the buck than a CD player.

Forget the multi-player junk, I would say save up a little more and find a used Jolida JD 100A.

It's an incredible CDP, and a good deal even at the $900.00 new price. But they're available from about $600.00 used:

usa *any* transport. yust be sure it has coax out. all ya have to know, is to hook up a 75 ohm coax cable from the cdp's output to the dac's imput. then a pair of rca interconnects from the dac's analog outs to yer preamp - yust like a regular cdp. nothing to it. the sound from an outboard dac like the p3a or a modded di/o & yust about any cdp ya wanna pick, w/digital out, will be much better than any one box cdp, new or used. imo, of course!
