Good morning. I stumbled onto this site while researching a set of speakers. I must admit that it was refreshing to see a review with real technical content/charts. I am on the backside of a technical/research career (aircraft acoustics - perception/ID - and structural dynamics), and about to become an empty-nester. The long-dormant audiophile virus has been awakened.

Welcome!

IMO the two most important components in any system are the loudspeakers and the room.

In recent years active monitors have gained popularity among consumers.  Used by the vast majority of recording/mixing studio professionals for decades, the general public has finally caught on to the advantages of using a much more sophisticated low voltage preamp and manufacturer matched individual amps paired to each driver for improved dynamics and bass performance not to mention many other sonic advantages.

Not to be confused with cheaper powered speakers, many of which have a stereo integrated amp in one cabinet.  Many of the upscale consumer active monitors include wireless connection, built-in DAC's, and room correction DSP.  Some of the better active monitors are simpler, less expensive analog versions such as JBL 305 Mk2, Kali IN-8, or Neuman KH 120 that are used in studios.  The more expensive, more featured consumer models include KEF LS wireless 2, Buchardt A500, or Kii Audio 3.

17 years ago we built a house that included a well insulated properly proportioned (8ft x 13ft x 21ft) man cave that I can use when I want and without interference.  The midfield setup is magical, imaging snaps into place.

BTW I'm a retired engineer (structural for 8 years, environmental for 3 years, and healthcare construction for 26 years) from Lansing MI.

Thanks for the details/info JLM. I should note that my audiophile experience is very limited. I’ve always enjoyed listening to quality recordings on exceptional equipment but kiddos & career have stymied a deep-dive. Given my love of all sorts of music, my trained hearing and appreciation of sonic details, and background as a researcher, I’m looking forward to learning more.

I’ve been in my home 17-yrs too but didn’t design/build it. I have two rooms in mind - the less ideal one (approx. 12.5x24x9-ft) is a general basement workshop for house projects/gun tinkering while the other (approx. 12x16x8-ft) will be dedicated to home theater and stereo listening. The former is mostly concrete and unfinished walls while the latter is not quite finished so somewhat malleable still. I would like an appropriate/nice system for each (less focused more peripheral vs intent and focused listening) … thus the beginnings of my journey.

FullRangeMan … thanks for open-baffle/full-range information. Fascinating reading so far, and some ideas are percolating. I’m a bit of a DIY’er and enjoy tinkering and woodworking. I think I’m beginning ro spec my next project.
