Don't know how long you've been out of audio, but here's my $0.02:

Go with CD quality streaming as your source (cheap, convenient, millions of albums available);

Go with active monitors (compact, sophisticated preamp, one channel of amplification per driver for better component matching, great dynamics/bass).

Thanks JLM - appreciate the friendly welcome (and the advice).
You're right :- I'm particularly interested in streaming (so much to absorb) ... and your point about non-compressed CD quality source streams is well made.
