I have a pair of XLS encores playing a CD to a Marantz NR1403 using pure direct and the high hat sounds (near 3:08 of song) are not heard well.  Pure Direct from Marantz is supposed to remove sound processing and is best for Stereo Music from what I know.

I am using a Sony UBP-X700 4K Blue Ray player as a transport and connected via HDMI to the Marantz.  I have also tried playing through apple music but cd sounds best, I also tried same song on a Denon DP-300F Turntable with an Ortofon Red, phono preamp is a Puffin from Parks Audio connected via Optical.

I have two thoughts that may be causing the issue.
The tweeter isn't playing (possible driver, crossover or wiring issue)

If the tweeter is playing okay, but the lower treble is missing, that means the polarity is flipped on one of the drivers, creating a big hole in the response namely from 900-4000Hz.

What is the easiest way to play sounds at that "spectrum" or range and see if the tweeter is operating at those levels?

Easy way to tell if your tweeter works. Do you hear Barry Gibb singing?

If you have any streaming service, just search for "frequency sweep". The resulting 'albums' will usually have songs that are just certain frequencies. The names are harder to predict on those, this searching for sweep.

Actually, 4180Hz is the highest C in the highest octave on a piano.  Middle C is around 550Hz.  Most notes are 150Hz to 2000Hz. 

But, not trying to be a wise ass, have you had your hearing checked lately?  Missing high hats are common to older ears.

I listened to the song you are asking about on my XLS Encores and everything sounded correct regarding the HH, ride cymbal and cymbal crashes. I am using Apple Music feeding an Aries 2 into a Freya + and a Vidar. If you have other speakers to try I would suggest a comparison. I would think that you would/could hear the difference on other songs if it is an issue with the tweeter. I also had the urge to put on my old bell bottoms and head to a roller skating rink, I had forgotten how much I enjoyed the Bee Gee’s! Thanks for that!

Thank you everyone!  A lot of great points.  My hearing is not perfect, my fiance's is much better.  I am visiting my daughter who has LGK 2.0 speakers and talking about high hats got me thinking about the range that LGK 2.0's can hit 80Hz - 20KHz.  Would a subwoofer that would fill in below 80Hz be very critical because music and movies, dialog, commonly would have sounds below 80Hz.  My daughter purchased a $150 turntable, an Audio Technica AT-LP60X, which is connected to an Emotiva TA-1 with LGK 2.0 speakers.  Long story short her simpler Turntable which does not require or allow you to set such as balancing a tonearm, tracking weight, or anti skate etc sounds much incredible, all of those settings are already preconfigured for the stylus that it comes with.  The Audio Technica sounds better than my Denon DP-300F with Ortofon Red with a Parks Audio Puffin preamp etc.  Maybe me "setting up" my Denon DP-300F is the problem, funny.

With XLS Encores what range is delivered through the tweeter versus the other driver in the XLS encores?   I understand the XLS Encores with the port not plugged is at 50Hz and with the port plug blocked it starts around 80Hz.

The crossover point is around 1800Hz with the woofer covering 55-1800Hz and the tweeter is 1800-20,000Hz.

I played Nights on Broadway, this is near 3:10 of the song by the BeeGees.  Is there an "easy" to test any speaker for a given song or frequency sweep which would compare a given graph of what frequencies should be "hit" and then one could overlay what was actually recorded from a frequency perspective to confirm that all of the frequencies that should have been played by the speakers/drivers were played?  It could be a good way to test a set of speakers perhaps?  Maybe I am wrong, lol.

Just run pink noise through the speakers and measure that.

Can you point me to a pink noise file that goes from 20Hz to 20000Hz?
