LS9 crossover upgrade
« on: 13 Dec 2022, 06:35 am »
Finally upgrading the stock crossovers for the LS9.  Got the upgrade package from Danny a while ago.  Elon from E-Zee will be performing the surgery.  I have prepped and tried to get the crossovers out as much as I could - what a pain to get them out.

What is in the upgrade kit?  I've been working on mine - caps and wire.

Glad to hear it Sunil! Yeah, I wish there was a bit more wire leading from the crossover board to the drivers so you can get them out a bit easier. Upgrade everything to the Max!

It takes a bit for them to recover from the Surgery, but after break-in, you’ll be happy. Patience.

Hope all is well with you and the Family.

I still have the stock crossovers from Av123 as well in my LS9s. This is something I am strongly considering as well. What are you guys putting in yours?

I saw several people in the past opt for making a little wooden box and making the crossover external with thier upgrade. Look forward to seeing the final results.

Thanks John.

It’s about time to get the upgrades done.
Elon will be using parts from the upgrade kit as well as Mills resistors, wire wood resistors and Miflex copper foil bypass capacitors.

Let’s hope that everything goes fine.!!!

What do parts others have used with good results?

One of our members that had the LS9 had upgraded to Mundorf SIO caps.  Since I built mine from a kit, I already had Danny's upgrades in the crossover.  I'm changing to some Mundorfs and Miflex.   I've got OCC wire to install as well.

OOC wire - as to change the internal wiring?

Yes.  When I built mine, I ran out of the supplied wire (don't remember why) and finished with some OFC stuff I had.  I've always meant to go back and redo it.  So I decided to upgrade the wiring.   And it's OCC, not OOC.  Ohno Continuous Cast.  Single crystal stuff.

Thanks for the corrections - OOC = OCC.  my bad.

I will look into it.

Are the stock wires bad?

No.  The AV123 OFC is good, Danny's wire is supposedly better.  From what I can find, Ohno is about the best stuff out there, but it's not cheap.  Now, will I hear any difference?????

Just checking in, any updates on the crossover mods? Hopefully it worked out for you.

I'm still listening to my stock av123 LS9's.

Deciding if the active route is worth the money or just go with the upgraded passive X - over and no rez, maybe a re-wire with better internal wire and Danny's terminals.

Although I have the wire to redo the tweeters, I haven't been motivated to undertake it.  I honestly can't really even say that the better caps I put in made a much difference.  It may well be that as my ears age out, upgrades make less sense.
