This is perfect thank you. Did you ever try the M3 or M4 triode master? This is all I can afford at this time sadly 😭
I've bought everything used. I was slavishly looking at forums when I saw the topic of open baffle speakers come up. First there were European models and then some references to Spatial Audio Labs. You'll find that those who own these speakers, whatever model, are very loyal and outspoken about how much they love these speakers. As poster Tyson has posted a few times, the speakers do really well in lots of types of rooms. Heck, mine are in my current office and all I did was plop them down in some place and I've never tried to fine tune their location as I don't have the room to do it in and yet they sound better than any other speaker I've heard. That is despite a half-wall between my distant listening location and the speakers, a bunch of shelves behind the speakers with my files and a concrete floor with a few throw rugs.
I never tried any other model because I live in Tucson, Arizona where boutique audio stores are basically gone and there was little or no opportunity to hear anything. There was a YouTuber, Brent LeVasseur, who had X5s and posted several video samples of the X5s playing (he still has some videos up). Even though these videos are on YouTube and are being played back through my crappy computer speakers, I still felt the magic.
So I slobbered over the X5s and around then (or shortly before) discovered USAudioMart and someone was selling fairly new X5s about 130 miles away at a great price. I took a trip up and listened and bought. Again, mostly luck. I got the speakers for a significant discount from new and, to me, they are my endgame speakers.
I'm not one to buy $10,000 speakers or $12,000 DACs. I try to buy used and see if I can get the most out of what I can get.
One thing I will say, is that the speakers demand good equipment and, by saying previously that I am a slave to them, I mean that they give you so much when you add good stuff so they actually have made me spend more money on good equipment.
If you don't have a bunch of money to spend on stuff, stick with your LRS speakers. They are great. What I do is save money here and there and put it aside so I can strike if something comes up that I can afford.
As to the different models, there is some taste issues involved. The "M" models are totally passive and you need to drive the bass speakers with the amp equipment you have. What I really loved about the X5s is the active woofer which made the speakers really easy to drive meaning I could discover the world of tube amps including very low powered SET amps. With the Maggies, I was just looking for big clean solid state power. With the X5s, I could experiment and find shades of what I liked. Sometimes, it took me a while to figure that out but the journey is almost as good as the end result.
Finally, you've come to the right place to ask these questions. I am not a very experienced audio lover in terms of equipment. I have some knowledge of how things are supposed to sound because I played in a few amateur rock bands and I did some recording of music (home stuff) so I have some knowledge of mixing and trying to get things to sound certain ways. The posters here are generous with their knowledge and help.
