Sony 7700 DVD vs Newer DVD transports

Hi All:

I recently purchased SN TubeDac+ and I am wondering if a stock Sony 7700 DVD player will outperform, as a transport, the new cheap DVD players offered from Sony, Toshiba, etc. I have a Onkyo S-535 DVD player that will hold me over for a while as far as HT goes. Also, has anyone tried the Onix CDP listed for $299 with a SN dac?

I've compared a stock S7700 as a transport to a stock Pioneer 563A and Toshiba 3950, and the S7700 outperformed both by a decent margin...

I also have a tubedac and started with a Rega Planet then a McCormack SST then a stock 7700 and now an EA turbomodded 7700 w/ Jensen cap. Each was a step up from the prior with big improvement with the EA Turbomods.

All of the above, plus, the damn thing is a workhorse. They never even burp. I have been using one for five years. Bone stock an excellent transport, dont care what anyone says, its one of the best. Worthy of modification if that is your thing. A++

Hey byteme...after getting the Jensen cap, have you had any problems with blowing fuses?

After I got my dedicated AC line, I'm getting voltages around 124-125v. The fuse in the S7700 is a 2a/125v fuse...and apparently the Jensen cap helps pull in a big current inrush. Had to replace the fuse with a bigger one (3A/250v) to not have it blow every week...

No issue at all here. I run mine through a BPT3.5 Sig. I don't think Steve replaced the fuse either because it wasn't included in the parts bag.

Just curious... Does anyone use the video portion of this player? Most people seem to just use it as a transport. If the video is good I just may take my Onkyo S-535 completely out of my system. My system is an integrated HT/2 channel.

I did, right until recently, when I picked up a Samsung HD841 for a new TV. The Sony works great, but then again, I don't split hairs on the matter of picture quality. It did a fine job with the new outstanding Mitsubishi TV set, and that was placed in another room, the only reason I picked up the new DVD player. Hope this helps.

My Panny RP91 was better for video... The Pioneer 59 dvd player kills them both for video. The EA modded 7700 is better as a transport than either of the before mentioned players.

Never used it for video either. Have an RP82 Panny that is too good to replace. I also have an integrated 2channel / HT system.

I considered the Pioneer Elite Universal for a while but at this point, I am more interested in getting good redbook playback and since I have a SN tubedac+, I only need to spend another $200 for an S7700. My video is good enough right now with the Onkyo, however if the S7700 is better I'll use it instead. My TV is a CRT based Hitachi Ultravision 57S500 and I want to get it ISF'd callibrated this summer which will cost another $700 or so. By the way, I think it still smokes most of the LCD and DLP offerings I see in the stores.

Well, I bought a S7700 off of ebay. The gentleman had done 276 transactions with 100% positive feedback. I used "Buy I Now" for $175. With shipping, it will be at my door within the week for $200. It was advertised as being in mint condition.
