Newbie from North Carolina
« on: 31 Oct 2022, 01:34 pm »
Hello, my name is P(aul) briggs and I discovered this forum in a search to find refoaming information for my VMPS original dual voice coil sub.  I'm more than a bit old school, still retaining Adcom amps I've accumulated over the years.  My wife is in the process of redecorating bonus room that doubles as my office and home theater/serious listening room and that's how I discovered the decomposed surround on the sub.  Looking forward to participating.

Welcome!

Caps in the older electronics could probably do with a replacement and a cleaning of contact points too.

Thanks for the heads up.  Now would be a good time to work on it since all of my stuff is idle during my wife's renovation project.

Following your suggestion on caps, I did a fair amount of googling on the subject and found a wide variety of opinions on the need and advisability of cap replacement based solely on age.  A lot of emphasis on the effects of continuous vs intermittent use, temperature of the unit, etc.  The Adcom amps are represented mostly as being quite bullletproof, and some owners report 20-30 years of nearly continuous operation with no significant deterioration of performance.  Quite a few comments like "if it ain't broke don't fix it."  My oldest/most used amps are a GFA 545 purchased in the late 1980's and a Dynaco 120 (kit) I built in the 1960's.  Both seem to still be working fine. Are there specific "best tests" that can be used to determine otherwise or is it just a matter of perhaps unnoticed performance deterioration?

Maybe this comparative image from Lampizator may help.

Thanks very much for the wake up call and pointing me in the right direction.  I obviously didn't know what I didn't know.  Will proceed on the learning curve for capacitor technology.
