3/4 Roundover Bit Part Number
« on: 14 Oct 2022, 09:53 pm »
I need to buy a 3/4 roundover bit for a router.

I did a search but could not find the thread that someone started asking same question. One of the woodworking/flatpack providers gave a detailed answer.

I know I need a 3/4 roundover bit with the bearing on the bottom.  But don't know the official name for it.

I will be renting a router so it can be a very cheap one. It only has to last a hour or so of use. Then I probably won't need it again.

So a Amazon, Home Depot, lowes etc. A link to or at least a part number with the correct name would be helpful.

Thanks,

I always recommend Grizzly Tools, affordable with excellent quality. Been buying from them for 30 years.

A 3/4" roundover (radius) is 2" in diameter, a big bit. I recommend a 1/2" shank. Make sure the router can handle it. $18.95

The hole in the rent-a-router's base may be smaller than 2" so you will have to make a new base plate from 1/4" plywood and a 2-1/4" hole saw, you will need the arbor too.

But don't order router bit just yet, look at the router first, see if it comes with a 1/2" collet and measure the base plate hole. Woodworking is about measuring, not guessing.

Thanks for the fast reply WGH.

That looks like what I needed.

All I know is the router is it is a Makita.

I will call the rental place to find out what size the shank is. And how big the hole in the base plate is.

Thanks.

Grizzly makes very good bits for the price.  So does Whiteside.  But you're only going to use it for one project???  Buy a 1/2" shaft chinese bit from Amazon or where ever.  They are very functional if not super durable- and half the price.  I don't recommend a 1/4" shaft on a cheap bit... especially if you're new to this.
If you must buy a 1/4" shank, but sure to make multiple passes and go sssllllooowww.   I've had more than one 1/4"  shaft break.

If you think there is even a chance that you might do multiple projects, step up to carbide... these really are pretty decent for the $$

Thanks for the tip on Grizzly.  Never thought about Grizzly for cutters, only tools.  How well do their router bits hold up ?

I have mostly used carbide tip router bits (Whiteside, CMT, vintage Craftsman, Freud, Diablo, Bosch, etc.).  I tried some cheap Harbor Freight spiral bits on a whim, but they didn't cut cleanly.

I used to sell cutting tools -- unless it's loudly advertised as USA-made, Grizzly's parts are import. Good import, but still import. It'll hold up fine.

I personally would recommend that Yonico bit that S Clark linked, mostly because they use a slightly harder grade of carbide -- C3, which is a decent grade for the purpose. Grizzly's spec sheet says they used K20 grade (approximately C2 grade), which is slightly less hard, a bit tougher. The Grizzly bit will stand (slightly) more impact without fracturing, but will also dull (slightly) faster. (Edit: Yonico will probably last a bit longer. Enough to matter? :dunno: It's all pretty similar. Neither will appreciate a hard crack on concrete floor.)
