JazzSavor in Brazil
« on: 11 Oct 2022, 06:16 pm »
Greetings from a NYer recently relocated to Brasilia, Brazil. By way of introduction, some years ago I fell for a Brazilian woman I met at a dance club in NYC on her birthday and first and only day in NYC at the ripe age of 50, then after a bizarre romantic comedy of near misses and some years of dual-hemisphere life, I closed my business, got married, and moved to a part of the world I never expected. Gotta be open to surfing life's waves, right?

I used to work in the music business at a Jazz & Classical record label and as a result became sonically completely spoiled, but after everything went digital in the '90s, I left for the world of visual arts. Now that I've relocated and need to reinvent myself, I want to reconnect with my music collection and audiophile past. Unfortunately, I've discovered that Brasilia seems to be a complete audio desert just when I am ready to upgrade my old electronics! Thusfar the only decent speakers I've found are Wharfedales, BUT the prices are 2-3 times more than in the U.S. So I'm considering humping components from GR Research, CSS, or LiiSong and DIYing open-baffles here but I've never done that so am wondering DOES ANYONE HAVE SUGGESTIONS FOR AUDIOPHILE STORES OR DIY SOURCES IN BRASILIA? Marc in Brazil.

You can buy overseas but customs duties are 100% over product, ship and insurance values:

Even used equips have hi prices, pais de ladrões:

You can do searches at hifishark.com and filter by region/country.  When you find something for sale, it will give you a site where the listing of the used product is advertised and then look there for other things.  For example -

https://www.hifishark.com/search?q=cambridge+audio

and then you could look at the site where the product is located -

https://pr.olx.com.br/regiao-de-curitiba-e-paranagua/audio-tv-video-e-fotografia/receiver-cambridge-audio-650r-1083931217

You can look at other places as well -

Hi,
The good guy in Brasil always was the kindly Moyses Tenenblat owner from Sound Advice/Sound Stage shop in Brasilia, he had a different pricing philosophy than other stores, he was economics teacher, unfortunately with his sad passing in 07May2018 at 77years old there is no other hi-fi audio shop with low prices in Brasil, he was much appreciated by his clients and his former students.
RIP

I do a google for Brasilia DF and found this:

What a nice tribute! Sadly he sounds like EXACTLY the person I would have loved to meet as my new mentor! I've been lucky in my life to have a few incredible men as mentors and could really use one now in this new stage and return to audiophile focus after so many years. I'd have simply listened, learned, and given over my money!

Thanks alot for this. I did explore the AudioTools database already to no avail but will definitely try your other suggestions. I really want to try some open baffle speakers to start mainly for the 3D soundstaging/imaging, but I'm curious about the DIY route, especially if someone else does the parts and I can find a better woodworker than I to do the baffles here in Brazil.

Thanks for the help. Do you know when I can conduct searches on AudioCircle? PureAudio Project is offering me a discount on the older version of their Duet15s, but it's still $5-6K and I'll have to hump them from NY to Brasilia. Curious to see what people have to say and compare them to GR Research, CSS, and LiiSong open baffles.

I glad to help, Iam at your disposal for the little I know.
You already can do searches now.

Yeah, the costs of getting goods like this into Brazil is crazy. I've been shocked at how much more expensive the construction materials here are compared to the U.S. Going the used route or finding a DIYer to help me might be better so thanks for the link!

Welcome!

Suggest high value options.  First find a good space to listen (room ratios/size/isolation are critical and will save the cost of treatments).  Second look into active monitors (low cost ones like JBL 305 Mk2 or Kali IN-6 are used in professional studios and work well in smaller/medium sized rooms).  Third consider streamer/DACs (like the low cost NAD BlueSound 2i) to complete the system.
