Hugh,

At some stage in the future I'm thinking of adding a sub-woofer to my Aksa 55N+/GK-1M system. My preference will probably be for a single sub rather than a pair so it should be possible to have it in the vicinity of the amps.

Is length of cables significant here? Maybe I should ask this question for both single and paired subs as others might be interested.

Hi Jules,

I've never noticed any sonic issues with long or short sub cables;  the propagation speed of an electrical signal through cable is around 40-70% the speed of light, depending on frequency and cable material, and at the very sluggish frequencies of audio it shouldn't make any difference.

For high audio frequencies, up around 5KHz and beyond, there are arguments about 'skin' effect, where the signal travels along an annular ring at the outside of the conductor, but comms engineers tell us this only happens beyond 1MHz.  Along with EMI, it's VERY important in the design of motherboards for PCs, but not too important at audio.

Cheers,

Hugh

thanks Hugh,

My question arose out of my own lack of knowledge about the nature of the stuff that travels down the wire in this case. I was wondering if it was in the class of a "signal" or "speaker output" if I can put it that way.

I am re-assured and slightly better informed   .

I would suggest that the optimum length of the interconnect cables between your preamp and subwoofer would be a length long enough to reach the distance between the two units.  Too short is bung.

Frank Van Alsitne - musing about how long a man's legs should be, and pondering the exact placement of the letters of his name.......

:(  oh dear ... looks like I'm stuffed. I'd been rather hoping that 200mm gap wouldn't matter too much

Would it help if I have the gap at the amp end rather than the sub end?

Mr Van Alstine,

I just loved your post above! a warning to Hugh though - this gentleman's sense of humour might just tempt your newest customer to look at others when it comes to preamp time!

(only teasing - please don't ban anyone from the forum on the strength of a lightrhearted comment)

- seriously it's great to see "vendors" displaying common sense in a business where so much black magic and B.S. abounds!

thanks for putting a smile on my face at the end of a lousy day!

best regards

David
