Veneering on rounded corners
« on: 31 Aug 2022, 02:11 pm »
Experts,

I'm looking for tips on veneering around corners. I'm planning to use 1/2" round-over on my current build (AV1-RS). I gather paper backed veneer is the way to go? And I gather iron-on is recommended? I'm was planning to use oak veneer to match my other speakers - might that be too brittle? Any recommendations on sources for good veneer? There seem to be a few online, any good/bad experience to share?

I do plan to try out and practice the technique on scrap first - but looking for any input that might help.

Any advice or tips would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

There are many veneer application techniques, it's a woodworking thing unto itself. For many newbies, I recommend paper backed veneer and Heat Lock glue. It's very forgiving and doesn't require an arsenal of tools. Oak is no more brittle than other veneers, your planned 1/2" radius should be fine. The paper backing will make it easier to handle. Veneer can't be easily fit around roundovers that intersect at right angles and will more easily bend along the grain.

Many resources for veneer but I like this one. Essentially a Mom & Pop that gets a lot done with a little, plus they developed Heat Lock. There's also a companion site that has much info on veneering.

Watch Peter's video, he doesn’t scrimp on the details and gives you a full measure of a lesson that builds confidence. I got bold and went for unbacked veneer using heat lock glue and Veneer Supplies softener on the curves, spraying it on after the front was ironed on and drying the corners with the iron after a couple of minutes.

Desktop Minis with a 1/2” radius.

Thank you both so much! I had not found all these references in my hunting so far. Peter your video looks to be amazing! (though I’ve not had a chance to view all yet). Looking forward to the learning.
