I'm not from Michigan, but I'm going this weekend. I did not attend last year, but I did attend the previous 2 MidWest AudioFests in Lima, Ohio. Those were fun and some of the players are the same, so.........., I'm really hoping for a good time!

Enjoy,

Just back from the fest.

Blue Circle had two VERY nice rooms with Shahinian speakers in each.

Salksound had two very nice rooms, one with the HT1's and one with the HT3's.

Classic Audio Reproductions had a very nice room.

I spent too much money in the Elusive Disc room.

Grumpy did a great job organizing the fest.

The Alcatraz Gentlemans Club near Toledo had a very high dancer to patron ratio.  Very friendly dancers as well..highly recomended if your in the area.

Those seemed to be the highlights for me.

I brought my bent and my EA moded digital front end up to Eric Hiders.

The Dodd 120 mono's sounded very good with Eric's Epiphony speakers.

My Bent got beat up by a prototype buffered (no gain) passive pre that will be coming out from Superphon.

My EA modded digital front end bested a Stan Warren modded Phillips SACD 1000.

Eric's room is the nicest room acoustic wise I have seen.

Marbles,

Any word on when Stan Warren will be releasing his new Superphon Revelation III preamp?

A poster at Audiogon stated he was reviving the Superphon line and will also be coming out with an amplifier soon as well.

I have no idea.  It was Eric's and he told me very little about it.

As mentioned above...it bested my Bent in about every catagory...but no remote option at this point.  It uses a DACT volume control, so you would think that a mechanical solution would be possible for that.

I have been speaking to Stan, and anticipate getting a copy of the new preamp for audition. When it happens I will invite AC'ers in the Houston area over to help me with the evaluation.

Stan says he used a minimalist approach, with the best possible components. A remote volume control is possibly in the works, assuming that it does not degrade the audio performance.

With Stan's track record, and your comments I am anxious to hear this unit.

Marbles, were the Salk Sound HT1's sitting on the HTS subs or stands? I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts on the sound of the HT1's and HT3's ...in general, and compared to each other. Did they have natural body and fullness, or sound a bit lean?

The HT1's were on stands..the same parts express stands I used in my home demo.

In the hotel room, there was no leaness.  Probably due to room modes which extended the bass significantly.

In my larger, and acoustically treated room, I first ran the HT1's full range and brought my subs under them at 50HZ.  This still caused a lean midbass.

I then ran my subs under them at 70 hz and this was much better.

When I actively XO'd the HT1's at 70 hz to my subs, the midrange cleaned up very nicely.  Not having to play the lowest notes helped the midrange a lot.  That is not to say they sound bad at all by themselves...in fact they sound very very good in small to medium rooms...just that they can sound even better when not asked to play full range.

The HT3's sounded a bit boomy in the bass because of the same room modes.  I should mention, the speakers were in different but identicle rooms.  They were on different systems though.

Having heard the HT3's in Jim Salks basement and having been EXTREMELY impressed with the bass before, I am not worried about it at all.

Other than that, the HT3's sounded VERY good.  I am very much looking forward to getting my pair.
