Hello Audio circlers!  New poster here. I am a musician and pianist.
I have listened to the Harbeth SHL5 plus speakers and was impressed with the realism and feel especially in the midrange.

However I am looking for a more full range speaker and the vrSr 3 by VS look amazing.

has anybody listened to these? I have a chance to go to Delaware to listen. Am in Washington DC area.

Interested in purchasing a used speaker in the 3-5k range.

Many thanks!

Phil A

Depends on your room and electronics. The Von Schweikert's can be big and bombastic with strong bass, not ideal for a small room. Big bass = big amp, got one? How old are the VS speakers? I have seen reviews dating from 2009, that means they have been driven hard for 13 years. New drivers from VS are $$$$. Read this thread:
"I just picked up a set of VR-4 speakers in disrepair. They mostly work but have a few issues. Two woofers are damaged..."
"[Von Schweikert] recommend to replace all four which would total out to $1200..."

If you love the Harbeth's go for it, you can drive them with 25w - 50w amp.

For $5000 I would buy the Salk Sound Song3 Beat but once again they require a powerful amp
https://www.salksound.com/model.php?model=Song3%20BeAT

The Salk BePure2 is has ultra low distortion, easy to drive with a 50w amp and above your budget.

Salk speakers compete with speakers 2-3 times their price, sound quality, construction, veneers and finish are always an A+. Give Jim, the owner, a call. He is always friendly.

+1 for "how big is the room"?

I had the Harbeth 30.1, 35th Anniversary speakers in a smaller room and the midrange is very pleasant and the upper bass is tuneful.

In my slightly larger current space, a medium sized 18'x14' room, I now have the Spatial Audio Labs M3 Sapphires. These do everything better than the Harbeths, but only if you can bring them out at least 3 feet into the room and sit about 8' back from them.

The Sapphires have open-baffle bass from two 15" professional paper cones. The depth, timbre, and texture of bass is amazing. It is realistic and palpable and true to the source. The midrange detail and openness is better than the Harbeth's and with a tube amp or preamp can convey even more emotion.

The M3s are $5k new and they are made in the US.

If you are in the DC area you can audition the Sapphires at Linear Tube Audio up in Takoma Park, MD. Nicholas will cue up whatever music you like and is very helpful and low key. Their listening room is the shop front for the workshop where they build their tube amps and preamps. It's lot of fun to visit, and they are music lovers and musicians (in many cases). https://www.lineartubeaudio.com/contact

I used to own Salk speakers and visited Dennis Murphy, also in the DC area, who designs the crossovers. Jim and Dennis and everyone at Salk are just terrific. But the open-baffle bass from the Sapphires (and other Spatial Audio speakers) is just a different and more natural sound. All box speakers sound like boxes after hearing open baffles.

Hi WGH,
Thanks so much for your thoughtful and informative post. I was stunned  that out of all the speakers out there u mentioned the Salk speakers - which are amazing.

Several years ago I met Jim Salk at the Capital fest show in the DC area  when he was unveiling the Salk Exotica 3. I had a wonderful talk with him for about 20 minutes while listening.  OMG those exotica 3's  sounded truly stunning and effortless so I have a great respect for Salk already. I have not heard his other speakers.

I am glad u threw out a few of the Salk speakers with amp requirements. I will check this out.

Also appreciate your input on the VS vr4 vs the Harbeth.
Again,  Thanks,  CS

Hello newzooreview,

Thanks so much for you taking the time and for your recommendation and description of the Sapphires. . I am very gratified that their store is only 30 minutes away from my home!

I am certainly going to check them out.

I also have about the same size room and am after a "natural" sound. Small world about the Salks btw.  it is nice to know that there are great speakers out there and dedicated people.

Appreciate your response and the links. thanks CS

Sure thing. It would be interesting to know your impressions if you make it over to LTA.
