Hi Fellows,
Maynard Ferguson is going to be at one of the small town colleges, Culver Stockton in Canton MO. this saturday for a FREE jazz festival. Here's the link http://www.culver.edu/publicrelations/article.asp?id=2599
Any of you want to wander up north a bit to my area of the State this Saturday it should be a pretty good time, I know I'm looking foward to it. It's about 100 or 120 miles from Lambert airport.

Holy cow! We used to listen to him when I was in high school! I played various brass and was in a drum and bugle corps when double-c's and balls were the dog's dick.

That was almost 30 years ago and he was pretty old then! Can he still scream on that trumpet? 'Cause besides that, there wasn't much else going on there!

I wonder if Maynard still has the 'chops' (and the diaphram) to make that trumpet scream like he used too  :!:

Last time I saw him was in the early '80's. His band was a bunch of young bucks that could blow right thru you also. Loud as hell.

(randog; did you play in a top twenty corps? most years, the Blue Devils and the Madison Scouts have a few Maynard's of their own)

...sorry to hi-jack your thread, Mark.

Santa Clara Vanguard national champs 1978. Main competitors were the Blue Devils and the Phantom Regiment (I think) who we beat for the national championships by 1/10th of a point... 1 tic.

I'm a dirtbag. Once I was out, I was out. I don't even watch the finals on PBS and never did, really. My mom still calls me when it's airing once a year.

I always wanted to see a show in person. I know the rush of volume of sound would make my hair stand on end.

The effort put out for the corps really burned me out. That was my junior year in high school. During my senior year I was in 7 different bands, some school, some independent. My HS instructor took the head position at the local state univ the same year I graduated and was shocked when I sold my horns and never looked back after HS. I was one of his all-stars and I threw it all away.

Sorry for highjacking this thread down memory lane. I'm out!  8)

Ah yes- Bill Chase. Still have an unopened sealed lp of the Pure Music album. I think that was the last one he made before his tragic death.
