TEAC A-L700P - Wow!

I finally received my Teac A-L700P amp in the mail. I just plugged it in 5 minutes ago. No mods, no tweaks, no nothing. I just turned the center channel volume all the way down and plugged it in. I'm already very impressed. Frankly, I'm shocked. Best $99 I've spent in a long time. Whoever first discovered this diamond in the rough, THANK YOU.

Next step is to remove center channel board. That's about all I'm comfortable doing with my limited electronic skills. Has anyone discovered any other simple mods for this thing since the last thread petered out?

My only complaint so far is that these have the most godawful binding posts I have ever had the displeasure of dealing with.

Talk to Wayne1 at Bolder cables..they have a forum here...he can change them out for you...

Ah yes, the little Teac overachieves again!

Other than pulling the center board, there are a couple of simple DIY things you can do. I recall that lcrim had some success with using copper flashing to shield the power supply from the boards.

Have fun with your amp, and do a search on the Bolder mods to the Teac, I am supremely happy with what Wayne did for me, and my Tripath.

I was looking at your gallery. Are your speaker cables homebrew? What are you using for banana connectors? I've never cared much for bananas, but they seem to be a requirement with the stock binding posts.

Can anyone recommend some decent, low-priced twist-on banana connectors I can try?

In my gallery, there are a number of historical photos - the banana's in those pics were simple Radio Shack ones, something to get me up and running with that 11g zip cord wire I had.

I presently use Bolder M-80 speaker cables, with spades on the amp end, and Eichmann Bayonets on the speaker end.

I have used DIY Cat5e also, and for that I just used bare wire with the awful stock Teac connectors.

I highly recommend the M-80 for use with the Teac, I am really pleased with the results.

Wild West Electronics has them for $99 shipped! I called first to confirm their procedures. They didn't have any in stock, but they called Teac for me to confirm availability. Wild West said they could get them from Teac in two days, then it would take about a week to reach me. That's exactly how long it took. Wild West is in AZ, I'm on the East coast.

I also contacted Teac and they confirmed that Wild West are an authorized Teac dealer.

I was very satisfied with the service from Wild West. Their CSR was very helpful on the phone.

Always happy to help out a fellow ACer, let alone someone who has a Teac tripath! They often get overlooked, with all the positive press around the other Tripath variants, but for me, for the $$ (including having them modded) they are great amps!

Keep us up to date, as it breaks in...

I've seen one person on Audio Asylum who has used these with Magnepans, but it sounded as if he was using them as monoblocks. Has anyone used one of these to drive two Maggies. Specifically I eventually plan to get MMGs and would like to drive them with this amp.

I drove a pair of MMGWs with a single Teac. I thought the combo sounded great, but remember, the MMGWs don't have any output below 100hz so I can't comment on the bass of a Teac MMG combo. Of course maximum SPL of a 30 wpc amp and 86db speakers is going to be limited.

Personally, I find the Teac to be an even better match with my Monitor Audio floorstanders. I *marvel* at the deep. articulate and palpable bass this combo yields from a pair of 6 inch woofers. In fact, my Lambda subwoofer is now out of the system and serving as an end table only

BTW, DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THERE'S ANY OF THESE TEACS LEFT ANYWHERE? THANKS.

A couple months ago I pulled my MG12 into the bedroom and set them up with my teac. Sounded ok at lower listening levels, the speakers were not positioned well in a small, 12x10x9 room. Didn't have the guts to push them very loud. Maybe MMG's would be different.

I have seen them when I do a Froogle search. But I got mine off of this board on the Trading Post. So maybe keep a look-out, or post a WTB request. Or create a saved search on eBay and have it notify you if one comes up for sale.
