Speaker Wire to use with tube connectors
« on: 31 Mar 2022, 04:48 am »
Good evening.

I will be building some LGK's, with tube connectors.  Want to make sure that standard, Monoprice 16 gauge speaker wire will work well with tube connectors.

Strand count (0.254mm x 26 strands) copper clad aluminum 16 AWG conductors

Will be connecting to a Marantz NR1510, with 5 way binding posts.  In the past I have used banana plugs with other receivers.

Not sure if there is a better choice for speaker wire that is not too expensive?

Want to upgrade later to GR-Research speaker wire in the future.

Perhaps 14 gauge would be better, the run will be less than 25 feet.

Thinking about -- Monoprice Access Series 14AWG CL2 Rated 2-Conductor Speaker Wire, 50ft, White

Before I upgraded to our braided cables, I used 14 gauge stranded wire from Kable Direkt on Amazon with tube connectors on one end, and bananas on the other. It worked out really well.

I'll probably switch back to using them for my LGKs once I put them on my desk.

I use 10awg Bluejeans for 16 foot runs.  They also have 12awg.  If you have runs longer than 10 feet, go with the 14 gauge wire.

Agreed, Bluejeans is a great 'value cable'.  I wouldn't go any lower than that in price.

Copper clad aluminum wire?

My cheap speaker cable recommendations are Blue Jeans 10awg, Kimber KWIK-12, Kimber 4PR (newest version)

If you try the Kimber 4PR then I would feed a 1/4" rope through the middle to space the strands apart.

4PR is only an 8-wire braid and very difficult to open up like that.  It can be done with 8PR though.

It is definitely more difficult than the 8/12 designs but still possible
