Welcome!

Hi,

New here.  Audiophile since 1992.  Got side tracked by home theater for a little while, but been back to two channel for sometime now.

Getting ready to build my 2nd dedicated listening room.  I have freedom to choose just about any dimensions I want.  Excited about it, but also a little nervous.  Hoping to share some key learnings with a few folks.

Very smart to learn and plan before making sawdust.  Suggest reading Floyd Toole's "Sound Reproduction" (1st edition) to learn how rooms inherently produce bass peaks/dips in frequency response.

While building a home 17 years ago I included a listening room.  It was in the basement (good for concrete floor and no windows).  Most importantly was the size/shape.  I followed Fibonacci ratios, also known as the Greek Golden rectangle:  8ft x 13ft x 21ft to minimize echo (those nasty peaks/dips).  Next I made sure it was well acoustically isolated:  insulated staggered stud walls; insulated flexible ductwork (can't hear the furnace); insulated exterior fiberglass door with weather seal.  Dedicate circuits with their own separate ground.  My downfall was the ceiling.  Although it's insulated the recessed can light fixtures let everything through (compared to the rest).  Next time I'll go with wall sources.

The 13ft wall is my front wall.  Setup is midfield with loudspeakers 5.5ft from front wall and 2.5ft from side walls (8ft apart), listening chair is 6.3ft from each loudspeaker.  Also have ten GIK (find them here at Audio Circle) 2ft x 4ft 244 absorption panels which do miracles elsewhere but are minimally effective in this room and three subwoofers carefully placed around the room to tame those bass peaks/dips. 

In my 40+ years in audio I've learned to value loudspeakers first and room second.  The best loudspeakers are active monitors, especially if you've got multiple subwoofers.  Active (one channel of power amplification matched by the manufacturer to each driver) is superior to passive design (high powered internal crossover) driven by customer chosen amp.
