Double Trouble
« on: 6 Mar 2022, 06:23 pm »
Wanted to order a double trouble or single sub.  Not sure if the subs should be facing different directions.  Not sure when to do that.  Also not sure about   Neutrik Speakon Connectors option? Also do not know when to select standard or fhole for amp box.  Basically is double trouble always preferred if space allows? Room is 10 ft x 30 ft, with an open floor plan on one wall of the room, for half of that wall.

Thank you for any replies.

For a room of that size you are going to want at least the doubles, but actually you'd want the triples. Don't think of your experience with normal box subs - you need more than you think since these are open baffle. To put it in perspective, my room is 19x14 and I have a pair of triples - I'm actually adding additional subwoofers now. The singles will not get it done for sure.

The forward/back facing drivers is a personal preference thing. Virtually no difference in sound. By reversing a driver the weight of the speaker is more balanced, and it's also very slightly shorter. However, many people prefer the look of all front facing drivers.

What about if I used the single servo plus kit?  It is a more standard sealed unit.   How does the triple open compare to the sealed single?

I haven't heard the sealed one myself, but people say it packs a lot more punch than the OB subs.

I have had single sealed, doubles and triples.   Cost and room the double is best bang for buck.  If you can afford triples, do it, as you can always reduce output to match your speakers.  Single is not going to get you where you want to go is my guess.    You can face the either way, same or inverted, just wire them correctly since the phase will be swapped on the drivers that are reverse.  I would have to defer to someone higher up, but the only reason for inversion would be weight distribution or ease of panel design.   I have seen both, no issues either way.  Good Luck.

Start with triples and that will almost certainly be enough.  If you get it set up and want more bass, start adding sealed subs, one at a time, until you feel there's sufficient bass.  Having heard the triples at Danny's, I'd be surprised if you ever want/need more than that.

So, it is possible/desirable to mix and match? For example, a single sealed servo along with a pair of OB doubles.

Of course.

What speakers will you be using the subs with?  And for 2 channel only, HT only, or some combo of both?

Still waiting on the speakers/crossover components etc. for my NX-Otica's. Strickly for 2 Channel listening.  My room(carpeted) is about 17' x 26' with 12' vaulted ceilings that have 6' knee walls on each side. Windows on each long end.

Oh that makes it easy - get a pair of triples for the NX-Otica, that's really the ideal solution for those speakers.

This setup in my personal experience is absolutely phenomenal.   I have a single sealed sub (SVS PB-2000 Pro) at the back of my room (odd shaped, 15' wide by 22' on the long wall and ~16' on the short wall) and a pair of double troubles at the front of the room.   The OB subs are only running half volume on the amp, yet there's still enough punch in there to scare the hell out of me (I watched the movie Antlers last night ).

I need to find someone in Eastern/Coastal NC or SC that has a pair I can audition. Unfortunately, I am a bass head(from car audio competitions in the '80s-'90s) and would need to "retrain" my ears/brain to adjust to what I understand is a very different bass signature that OB presents.
Unless mixing the OB with a sealed servo sub would be the best of both worlds? <===me speaking without knowledge or experience on this setup.
