Klipsch RP8000F XO before twist & solder
« on: 3 Mar 2022, 11:57 am »
Hi everyone, getting ready for my first upgrade. I received my kits yesterday for RP8000F and RP504C.
I'm starting on my RP8000F first.
I temporarily put together my first XO for RP8000F. I sent a pic to Danny to get an approval on inputs and outputs before I finalize my twisting of connections and soldering.
I'm having fun! hope I'm doing it right? I certainly don't mind criticism, a good way to learn.

As I walk through your layout It does look correct.  The only simplification I could add would be to possibly remove the iron core inductor from the circuit completely.  It's not necessary to keep it separate, but considering that is the only component in the lower woofer circuit, it would be pretty easy to mount that in cabinet separately, place it inline with lower woofer on the "+" side connection and then wire the "-" directly from tube connectors or binding post straight to the lower woofer.  That makes it easier to physically separate the iron core from your other inductors, and slightly simplifies, shrinks, lightens, the main board with the tweeter and mid-woofer circuits.

Again, not necessary, just another option for consideration.

The more I see these questions on a continual basis, the more I realize that as this diy market continues to expand, it's absolutely time that each build or upgrade kit also include some degree of example layout and install instructions.  I can't imaging how many emails Danny gets on a daily basis, seeking help with this type of thing.

Yep, if I were Danny I'd have some crossover boards printed up and send those out with each kit.  It would save a ton of time in questions to them and also save a lot of stress on the newer DIY type customers.

That's a great idea! I had already heard back from Danny and soldered everything up, so probably won't change it now, but I appreciate it. My board will be mounted on the back panel right next/below the lower woofer.

I got my first RP8000F done, works great! With minimal listening, midrange has come alive! Now, can't wait to get the other one finished.
I used more wire and more NO Rez than supplied, maybe my inexperience? I used a full 2 sheets for the first speaker. I didn't waste any, just tried to cover all bare surfaces. Are there areas that don't require covering? I ordered one more sheet of No Rez and 10' more of wire. So far, very pleased and a fun project.

Best to use a little too much Norez than not quite enough, you did the right thing.  And re: sound quality - yeah people that haven't personally experienced how big an upgrade this is might be skeptical that a speaker 'designed by Klipsch engineers' can ever sound better.  But they can.  A LOT better.  Can't wait to hear how you like them when the 2nd one is all done.

Thanks!
I finished up the second one, used the No Rez and wire from my RP504C kit, which I'll do next week when I get my stuff.
Anyway, just played about six songs I'm very familiar with. I have to say, What a Difference!! It's very noticeable. The mid-range is now great! The bottom end is cleaner and more tight, almost unbelievable.
I'm streaming Hi-Rez with a Bluesound NODE N103 through a Denafrips Ares II DAC, that's another story, but Wow!
Great upgrade!

The cool thing is that they will continue to sound better and better up to around 100 hours because the parts will take that long to burn in.  Enjoy!

Hi Hobbs, Danny,

Sorry, but since my original feeling of overwhelming...I decided to set aside my X-over Upgrade for my Klipsch RP8000-F; I however completed my speaker cable upgrade & did take me a while & ran across a few snags but decided to forego the speaker connector upgrade to a banana plug coz i have the spring type wire connector that you plug in the connector hole. The banana plugs won't fit the speaker connectors of my vintage amp. Meantime, I listened & enjoyed slowly burning in my brand new RP8000-F's...I already love the way they sound but CAN'T WAIT TILL I INSTALL THE X-OVER UPGRADE KIT.  :o

Just another question regarding final wiring...again, I'm embarassed to ask but need to....I'm copying Tom899's x-over wiring. Thanks Tom! Now, there's a wire from the bottom right of the large copper coil unconnected...where to i connect that to?; there's the white sonic cap ~middle of the board with a wire sticking up...& that goes to???; for the board connections, there's the one green slim piece with 2 side by side, but the one on top has an unconnected wire sticking up...where does that connect to. I don't want to ruin my brand new speakers, so i have to eat my pride, but I am definitely out of my comfort zone.

the rectangular copper inductor, i"ll mount on a separate board...you guys mentioned, the one wire connects directly to the (+) of the lower woofer, & the other end goes where in the binding post, (+) or the (-) one. Whew...quite humbling.

I truly appreciate all you guys vlogs & DIY's...I'll let you know the outcome. My Speakers are already burnt in coz they sound a lot smoother than when I first listened to them.
God Bless,

God Bless,

I believe you are looking at E-Zee's picture, which he separated the lower Woofer Core to another location. So that bare lead you see goes to the core that is not in the picture.
My picture at the top has all the parts on one board with all inputs and outputs labeled.

Hi Tom899,
you are absolutely correct, that x-over set up was from E-Zee's set up. Sorry about the confusion. I'll send Hobbs a message referencing E-zee's set up, i need to know where the lines would terminate.

thank you.

Guchee2,

I'll send you a private message with my phone number.  Give me a call with whatever question you have.  That way Hobbs doesn't have to break his work flow.

I'm happy to help you through it.

E-ZEE,
THANK SOOOO MUCH. I definitely don't know what i am doing but had already purchased both the cable upgrade kit & the x-over kit. on the X-over...i know the rectangular iron core inductor will be on it's own board but you didn't show that,...sorry, I'm definitely out of my comfort zone & just hate to damage my new speakers for assuming. yes, youre so considerate...i felt like a burden to Danny & Hobbs.. thank you sooooo much. Gov bless.
