About 5 years ago, my wife bought me a cooler that was customized with speakers in it. After one day at the beach, it died and the battery would not charge. The company refunded our money and I thought, "I could make a weather proof boombox." I bought a pelican case, marine speakers, amplifier with bluetooth, a battery, and put it all together. That was a huge success as the boombox can last a full day at the beach with more than enough volume. That's what got me started in diy speakers.
I made 3 home speakers not knowing anything which all failed. I made all of the rookie mistakes, made too small enclosures, threw a woofer and a tweeter together on a board for my first OB not knowing that the driver was designed for a sealed enclosure, etc. The easy road would be to buy a kit and put it together but I ran across a review of the Boenicke W5s and saw that I could buy the drivers so I ended up creating a clone of the Boenicke W5s. I found as many pictures I could, designed the enclosure, bought some oak planks, found someone with a CNC, and put them together. That was my first home speaker success. I also created a combination mini-subwoofer and Brio Trio last year for the family room and an open baffle for the bedroom which both turned out well. Now I am redoing the Brio Trio enclosures because both speakers fell off the counter and busted because they were pushing the bass so much

My next project is to tackle replacing my store bought home theater speakers and replace them with diy speakers.
Here are a few pics of the speakers.
