G'day!
« on: 22 Feb 2022, 06:28 am »
Hello AC!

Good to be here.  I'm looking forward to learning here and sharing what I have learned after years in audio production.  Retirement is opening new horizons and now we can travel!  :thumb:

Good on you all  :D

  • To whom more was given more will be required.
    • Never go to a psychiatrist, adopt a straycat or dog. On the street they live only two years average.

Record studio engineering.  Commercial adverts mostly.

Then you should be comfortable with active monitors.  I've been using single driver loudspeakers (active by default) or traditional active designs for going on 20 years.  Most active monitors nowadays have built-in DSP/DAC's, too bad because the added circuits are less than ideal (speaker guys focus on drivers, cabinets, and amps).  Have heard JBL 305, Kali IN-8, Dynaudio BM5 Mk3, JBL 708P, Genelec 8050B, and Neumann KH 310 (going from cheaper to more expensive and only the 708P had built-in DSP/DAC).  Owned the Dynaudio and 708P, the 708P was probably the best all around loudspeaker I've ever heard but the idea of built-in lackluster DSP/DAC bugged me terribly and unloading my commissioned single driver loudspeakers would have been hard.

Be careful not to buy powered loudspeakers.  Actives use sophisticated low powered crossovers and one channel of amplification per driver for superior design.  Powered are just passive loudspeakers with the amps built into the speaker cabinet(s).

A couple of promising actives that do have DSP/DAC/etc. built-in are KEF LS50 Wireless 2 and Buchardt A500.  The A500 is more expensive, complicated, flexible, and go an octave deeper (subwoofer very optional in an average sized room).
