PMC and Bryston rumors
« on: 31 Mar 2005, 11:03 pm »
Hi.
Recently I heard rumors that PMCis not represented in the US by Bryston any more. Also - the new entry level powered speakers don't use Bryston.
Is the collaboration between both companies coming to an end or something?

(IMHO - It would be bad for both companies)

I believe PMC has its own distributor in the US while Bryston is still the distributor in Canada.

The active DB1+ and TB2+ use Flying mole digital amps instead of PowerPacs so you are right on.

No idea on this. Maybe James can answer you.

HI All,

Yes it is true that PMC has formed a Company to do their own Consumer speaker distribution in the USA.
Yes it is true that the DB1S Activated and the TB2S Activated use Flying Mole Class D amplifier moduals.

Can anyone confirm/infirm that this is the amp model used on those speakers:

James, are Flying Mole still around? Aren't PMC using their own Class D modules now on the smaller 'quasi-activated' speakers (and on the upcoming Active IB2s)?

Yes I was told Flying Mole is not in business any longer and PMC are using some other design.

That's a shame on many levels...

...A company like PMC should have stuck with a trusted company that'll be around for a long time rather than changing it up and taking a chance on an upstart company.

...PMC should have gone back to Bryston IMO - impeccable build and sound quality, customer service/support, and sonic synergy.

...Another company (Flying Mole) falls victim to the economy?

...Then again, with a name like flying Mole...

Digital schmidgital. Once you figure out that with such approach the speaker load is part of the DAC's analog filter, you also realize that you need custom not generic amps for your speakers.

PMC USA, is actually an arm of PMC UK.... For the TB2-SA// we are using a PMC DS-001 class D amp module that was voiced after a 4B SST2.  We still very much use Bryston as reference for all of our speakers.  For our high end Active we are also still very much pleased with the performance attained with Bryston amplifiers and crossovers.

That's good to know...I wish your speakers were more affordable, however.

The EB1i's and the 7B SST2's are one of the best combos I've ever heard for all genres of music as well as listener appeal with a surplus of controlled bass, deep and tight, a midrange with natural and neutral presentation, and a silky upper end, with clarity and without any degree of harshness. I'm quite saddened that this relationship will be divorcing.....

That's cool. I'd love to hear (and have) that combo!
