What are people using for transports?

Are there problems with using DVD players?
I understand that the output has to be PCM (and not dolby).  Is this something that can be set on the DVD player itself or does it depend on the DVD?  I'd like to go this route if it allows me to watch movies (in stereo only).

Or, is it better to use a CD player as a transport?

Hi, I am using a DVD player with a Nixon DacKit. With this player (LG Electronics) you set the player to PCM output at 48 kHz and it works fine with the DacKit.

The only drawback is that the player powers itself off after a while, and when there's no signal the Dackit has a low-level high-pitched squeal which can be  a bit annoying.

Glad to hear that the SN accepts 48 kHz.  I was wondering if it was limited to just 44.1 (redbook).  Frankly I'd prefer an output of 44.1 to avoid non-linear upsampling but I am noticing more dvd players that output 48 kHz.  I am thinking of moving my SN TubeDac to the tv room and feeding it from a Panny dvd recorder.. .not sure what the Panny outputs though.

I have heard good things about Panny dvd players both as standalone and as transports but have not tried one for myself yet.  Good as they may be I imagine that they will benefit a lot from basic power conditioning and dampening.  They cost under $100!

Thanks for the responses.  I'm hoping some others chime in and 'name names' (of transports that mate well).  My concern was that the digital output simply passed what it got and could not be set by the user.  I seem to remember reading somewhere here that DTS DVDs produced some weird noise when fed into the SN.

Another thread has just been started regarding all in one players v. transport and SN DAC.  I'll keep my eye on that one too.

Try the Stello CDT-200. I have one and love it (I am not using the Scott Nixon though)
