Best Artists (discoveries) of 2021
« on: 6 Jan 2022, 10:05 pm »
Because I'm an old guy, it's very tempting for me to only listen to older music that I already love and then complain that 'kids these days don't make good music'.  But it's not true.  There's all kinds of great music being made by a lot of new artists that are equally great.

Here's a list of some artists that I 'discovered'.  Some in 2020, others in 2021:

2020
Tre Burt
Halsey
Billie Eilish

2021
BTS
Arca
Rhiannon Giddens

What are some of your favorite artistic discoveries from the recent past?

Hey!

Yeah, I'm getting old too Tyson  And that doesn't stop me from listening to some great musics from today's young artists. Yup, you're right there are some talented young artists out there make great music.

2020

Benee

The 2020 was rough for everyone. I was out of work while the whole world was under lock down. But I came across this young singer from New Zealand, Benee on TV and her single "Supalonely" And it stuck in my head! Also, love her music video... I actually dyed my hair blue after I saw the music video! Am I too old to do that?

So, if there's one album that got me through 2020 is will be her "Fire on Marzz/Stella & Steve" not new, but a combination of her previous 2 EPs that was finally released worldwide in 2020. I do like the whole album. And later that year I got her first full album "Hey U X" of which I also like.

2021

Aurora

Although her album "All My Demons Greeting Me As a Friend" was released in 2016 I just came across her last year. A young Norwegian. I love her vocal which is quite captivating. After I got her first album I also got her second "A Different Kind Of Human Step II" which is also great and now I'm waiting for her new album to come out this year.

Olivia Rodrigo

Honestly when I first heard her perform her hit single "Driver License" on SNL I think think must of it, it was good but not like wow for me. But I noticed that a friend is listening to her so I though I'll pick up the album. I have to say that her album is growing on me, I'm now like the whole album.

And that's my list... by the way for those who like vinyl, all these albums were release on vinyls and at least those copies I got are very good sounding and good pressing. Let's see what I'll discover this year. Good topic Tyson.

Tyson, I'm gonna take a little liberty with your thread and link some pandemic finds from YouTube. Not really audiophile stuff, but more about emotional impact on me, I suppose.

I think this was my first F&F:

And this one continues to be a particular F&F favorite:

More recently, something about kids and music I guess:

I used to insist I was keeping up with modern music until I realized that my favorite "new" band has been around for over 25 years. Oops.

Who did I "discover" in 2021? Not likely anything new, as my new listening experiences come from the occasional 1000 CD purchase from someone dumping their collection. Anyway, here are the ones that were new and exciting to me this year.

Riverside
Amplifier
Bebel Gilberto
Stereophonics
Nickel Creek
Anavae
Wolf Alice
RPWL
Lonely Robot
Reign of Kindo

Rhiannon Giddens gets my recommendation too
Carmen Gomes Inc. - Up Jumped the Devil and Ray! are jazz interpretations of Robert Johnson and Ray Charles songs with impeccable 5 star sound production by Sound Liaison
John Hurlbut and Jorma Kaukonen - new and old

I tried Billie Eilish but I'm never that depressed.

New to me was Nubya Garcia's "Source" (jazz saxophonist - part of the burgeoning London jazz scene). Liked that quite a bit. Think it was released in the last year or two ...
