Which gain setting do you generally use on your Bryston amp 23db or 29db gain. Does anyone switch gain settings when listening to music or watching a movie?

Hi,

Wouldn't it depend on how efficient your speakers are as to what gain level you prefer?

The gain is supposed to adjust for single ended IC or balanced IC. But right off from my P-26 to 4B-SST² the high position is better sounding. either with balanced or single ended the 'high' setting sounded better. IT is true the higher setting using balanced wires means less available movement of the preamp volume control. that is not a problem to me

As they once said in Rowan's and Martin's Laugh In, "Vely Eeentelesting!"

With a 17dB gain on my linestage and using everything balanced, the 23dB setting is ideal for my purposes.
I enjoy having a little more gradient volume control.

I’m using a BDA 3.14 as a digital preamp connected via XLR to a 4B3 powering a pair of Paradigm Persona 3Fs.
Since the Personas are fairly efficient, I thought I’d try the 23 db gain setting. I came away impressed with the improvement.

The background was quieter which brought out additional detail.  Overall the sound was smoother with no change to soundstage width and depth and I can now use more of the volume control on the 3.14.

i may experiment with my setup 4BSST to BP25P to Wharfedale Linton 85th which are 90 db efficient

I'm using xlr cables and the 2V setting and i have very little movement in the volume knob (8:30) before i get blown off the couch lol

i may try RCA and the 1V for S&G and see if i prefer the sound up around 11 o'clock
