Tube amp pop, crackle, and smoke
« on: 31 Dec 2021, 04:16 pm »
Very excited to get my first tube amp. Carefully inserted the tubes. Turned the amp on, one of the tunes made a slight popping sound and smoke and a little puff of smoke came up from the amp. I turned the unit off.

Now I am researching.... so am I screwed?

  • To whom more was given more will be required.
    • Never go to a psychiatrist, adopt a straycat or dog. On the street they live only two years average.

That's an inauspicious debut.
Sounds like shorted tube took out a resistor.

Since you're asking, a professional should evaluate it for you before trying to turn it on again. Hopefully, they can also test the tubes and advise on necessary replacements if needed. There's  a sticky at the top of the Tube-o-Phile circle that lists repair technicians around the country.

Thankfully the seller is a fellow AC member and is very responsive and very helpful. We are taking measures to get it looked at.

Thanks for all your input.
