X3 Owners - tweeter height vs your ear height
« on: 28 Dec 2021, 03:07 am »
The tweeters are quite high on the X3's are you sitting in higher then normal chairs to get your ears inline with the tweeter or are you just sitting below the tweeter? My current chair has me below the tweeter.

My seated ear height is 38 inches.  The center of the AMT driver on my X3s is 46 inches high (they are on GAIA II feet).  My listening chair (MLP) is 10 feet 7 inches from my speakers.  I have no problems with any AMT driver frequencies, likely because of the wave guide.  My understanding is that the AMT driver plays 1KHz and above.  I play a lot of solo piano music (both classical and jazz).  Plenty of notes above 1KHz with no issues.  All three drivers blend very well.

Edit:  If Clayton says ear height should be the bottom of the waveguide, I'm still a bit low.  The bottom, in my case, is 41 inches.  That's 3 inches higher than my ear height.  I do not feel any need to make changes.  Maybe, some day, raise my recliner 3 inches.  Bottom of the priority list.

I had asked Clayton about this and his reply was that the waveguide on the Xs is designed so that your ear should be at the bottom of the waveguide; i.e. not the middle of the tweeter.

At the main listening position my ears line up with the upper half of the mid range driver on my X5s, or lower if I'm slouching on the sofa. At my desk, which is right behind the sofa, I do line up with the bottom of the waveguide, but I prefer the sound with the waveguide above my ears.

Ok thanks for the info. Not sure if or what I'll do about it.

Raise the rear footers and tilt the speaker slightly forward a few degrees at a time until the balance locks in.

I didn't know anything about this and nothing was mentioned in the setup guide as I recall. My ear height was about in the middle of the wave guide. I exchanged the short front spikes for the longer ones leaving the short ones on the back. That raised and tilted the X5's backwards slightly. Putting a laser measurement tool flush to the bottom of the waveguide points the light at height equal to the bottom of my ear. I really don't hear any difference in the sound after the change. I don't know if I'm on the right track or not but at least it didn't mess anything up.

I had noted that when I stood up from our couch, there was an audible change, perhaps a more focused sound, so I raised the rear of the speaker by adding footers at the rear under the optional footers.

I will change the hardware to accommodate adjustment on the fly.

Both my wife and I liked the change. I would say that we are still at the lower position of the waveguide.

Abomwell your X5'S are much shorter then X3's your ears should fall in the sweet zone from your listening position with normal seating height.

Yes, you are correct and if I sit on a couch they will. But I sit on a non-cushion'd chair that puts my several inches higher.

I’ll try that as well.

I have noted the same thing. Standing behind my couch my X5's sound very different in a way that I like. I suspect that in that position my ears are at the very top of the AMT waveguides. My guess is that I prefer them to not be pointed directly at my ears. I have Gaia feet that are adjustable so I my try raising the back of the speakers a bit to see how this affects my normal listening position.
