What’s the best priced option to isolate subs?
« on: 26 Dec 2021, 03:46 pm »
Happy Holidays.

I’ve got a pair of NX Studios sitting on top of Dual H Frame Subs on a hardwood floor.  I’m using it mostly for HT and loving it. With deep bass scenes, I’m getting a massive vibrations and distortions.  Any recommendations?

I’m looking at the Herbies Fat gliders for the Subs. Any experience with these under the subs or any other recommendations?

Thanks,
Morgan

I use Aerial SW12 subs which are heavy, over 100 lbs each. The best thing I’ve found at a reasonable price are NoboSound springs. They’re about $35 per set of 4 the last time I looked.
I have a suspended hardwood floor and always had issues with pickup on my vinyl rig from low bass notes, until I added the springs. I’ve tried various other devices including spikes, cones, cork pads etc. The key is that you want to decouple the subs from the floor. Using spikes has the opposite effect.

Build a set of these -- just wood slabs and outriggers. Priced a bit higher than you may want to spend, but looks great and gets the subs off the wood floor:

I have used some plywood with 4 holes drilled through it and put 4 racquet balls in the holes (more if very large sub), set the sub on top.  The holes were smaller than the racquet balls but allowed them to set into the plywood a bit so they didn't roll around.  Not very pretty but cheap and it worked very well.

I love the creativity.  Would it however “bounce” the monitors on top of the subs?

Yes that looks great.  That maybe a long term solution when back is healed and I can build those!

I’m using this and it seems to work:

Isolation mat for hvac, $20 a square foot or so.

Check the SVS website. They have a 4 pack of feet  for $50 that I placed under one of mySubs. Fairly happy so far. Thinking about replacing the “Pad” I have under another sub that seems a bit too “wobbly” to my way of thinking.

I had a  SB-4000 and used Herbies tender feet.  It made a huge difference, https://herbiesaudiolab.com/collections/component-isolation/products/tenderfoot?variant=12643255353399  Here is an example. Best bang for the buck product I have bought.

I’ll ask the obvious questions…distortion and vibration could be 2 very different things.

Are you sure you’re not overloading your subs? Easy to do with HT.

Did you sweep the room to find any resonances excited by the subs?

Before spending money on isolation devices, did you try something simple…like beach towels?

Are you trying to isolate the subs from the floor, the speakers from the subs, or both?

Personally, I’d go toward coupling rather than isolation.

I tried https://avroomservice.com/evp-2/ after reading several rave reviews (including Jim Smith).  They have made a huge difference on bass in my system under my subs and full-range speakers.  They are not cheap, but fairly priced and a tremendous value for what they deliver.

Great question!  It’s a small room so it’s probably being overloaded.

And yes I’m asking several questions at once:  do I need to isolate the speakers from the subs in addition to whatever route I use for the Subs?

That’s a great tip for the towels.  I’ll try that out.  Makes perfect sense to trouble shoot it this way!

Grazi.

Re:  room sweep.  I haven’t done that yet.  Have a buddy a few hours away who has offered to loan me his equipment and I just haven’t made it up.  I’ll do that as soon as I can get there!

Yes those look great and seem to be a popular choice here.

Don’t overcomplicate this.  Burn yourself a CD with tones that range from 20 Hz to 200 Hz. Walk through the tones and listen for stuff in your room that rattles: picture frames, cabinet doors, Knick-knacks, etc. Yes, 1 Hz increments make a difference. You’ll be surprised what you find.
