Considering New Speakers
« on: 24 Dec 2021, 04:14 am »
Hello, I'm considering selling my beloved Avantgarde Duos which I've had for 20 years & never thought I'd ever sell them.
I haven't listened to music for 2 years & I just started a few days ago. The stereo just doesn't sound the same. I'm thinking about changing my speakers & possibly going with Spatial Audio X5's. Any opinions? The Avantgarde's are just not sounding like I remember them.
Thanks,

Welcome to AC  :thumb:
I have heard the Duo around 2004/5 in a big room with DCS and BAT pre/power, it was a clean sound but emitting sound only to front is a limiting factor to soundstage form.

Welcome!

Heard the Duo's many years ago.  Needed a big room and a very fast subwoofer, provided a very direct uncolored sound.  The subwoofer I heard them with was far too slow and caused a major distraction.  Will be hard to follow-up.  Gave the Spatial's a quick listen few years ago at a show, didn't impress me.  Spatials are open baffle, a completely different presentation, an apples versus oranges comparison.

1. Let everything break in again.
2. Your hearing and your expectations for sound quality have changed in 20 years.
3. Other speakers may not sound any better if your brain/ears are the "problem." It will take some listening  practice and retraining to become a competent audiophile again.

Check the wiring, then double check.  The first thing to look at when speakers don't sound right is out of phase cabling.  And every time I was positive, in my head, that I had it correct, well you know what the result of double checking was.

Starting A New
Hello music & audio lovers.
My name is Jeff & I'm certainly not new to audio. I've been playing with audio equipment for more than 50 years. I just started listening to my stereo after more than 2 years, since COVID began.
My stereo just doesn't sound the same. I'm wondering if It's time for a change. I have Avantgarde Duos for over 20 years & I love them dearly. Reading about the Spatial Audio X5's & the wonderful reviews, I was wondering if I should make a change. I have all Atma-Sphere equipment that would work well with the X5'S. Any opinions & also comparisons.
Thanks,

richidoo

Let your system break in again after such a long pause.
Let your ears and brain readjust to high end sound.
I personally think the peak potential of your horns is greater than the OB speakers you mentioned.
You have the makings of an incredible system. Just give everything a chance to wake up again.
Merry Christmas and Welcome to AudioCircle, izzy!

Izzy,
As you already started a topic here in the Starting Block Circle I will merge this current topic with your previous one.

When my system has sounded poorly in the past I cleaned all the cable connections very well (DeoxIT 100L). More than once this action turned my dismay back to extreme pleasure.

You have fantastic speakers. What you’re suggesting in my humble opinion would not be a positive step.

Where are you located? No need to be specific just a general idea…ie state, region, country…
