Down the Rabbit Hole i go.
« on: 6 Dec 2021, 04:36 pm »
I guys, and gals.
Im new to the world of Audio Appreciation
And i was just standing at the edge of the big hole being curious of what was going on inside
When there was thumping and shaking and the ground gave way and i started falling into the world of the audiophile
I thought i had been transported to another world with people speaking in tounges
And my head was spinning with all this new stuff with a bunch of numbers and squiggly lines on graphs
Until i realised that no, they are actually speaking english, they are just using a bunch of words i have never heard before.
So i thought, get a hold of yourself, its not that bad.
Its just some boxes with round things in them that make some sounds.
Oh wait, some of those sound making things are square shapped as well.
Oh well, i can work with that.
So all i need to do is get a couple of round things and build a box to put them in and im good to go.
Sure, i can manage that. Then i can ride those beautiful waves of sound all the way back home.
Some banging here, some screwing there, some connecting of wires ect and im done.
I dont see why some make a big deal out of this, look, mine even looks better than that guy who everone think is really good at this stuff.
Ok, lets go.
CLICK!
WTF!!!? WHY THE #@$& IS THIS MAKING MY EARS BLEED!!?

Wait, What?
What is a crossover?

Oh god, im never going to get out of here and get back home.
I wish there was someone that could help me figure this stuff out.

Welcome to the fold !

So, your question, 'what is a crossover' ?  Well, as a life long railroader I can tell you it's a pair of switches that allows a train to cross from one set of tracks to another !   :green:

It really is less of a big scary rabbit hole with monsters and voodoo.  It's more of a friendly neighborhood bar filled with old wives tales and bragging over the biggest fish caught many years before. Where you argue over what's best to put on the tv and you're always trying to get the perfect butt print into your seat at the bar. Welcome to the party.

What is a crossover?
Xovers will divide the music into frequencies and direct the bass to the woofer, the mids to the midrange driver and the treble to the tweeter, in this case we have 4 xovers/ freq cuts.

Unfortunately to do this the xovers consumes energy from the amplifier (music) and transforms it into heat, usually this is the low level musical energy (harmonics) this is a loss. In addition the phase of the musical signal is lost too, also the inumerous musical frequencies and harmonics time alignment of the recording will also be lost.

So if you get satisfied with bad sound, artificial and sound stage with depth of a sheet of paper buy a fancy paint boxed speaker with a xover and pay more for it, but if you are demanding on music and want pay less use a full range Open Baffle speaker direct from the amplifier, without EQ, notch filters, DSP etc with a small tube amp or a SolidState Single Ended(rare) or yet a Class D.

A wonderful solution for a newbie with some cash (current pricing is about $4500 USD) and who is willing to take a big leap is the Buchardt A500, a throughly modern active monitor loudspeakers.  They only require a laptop/tablet/smart phone to control via a small hub and can easily satisfy all your audio needs if you lock into internet streaming CD quality music.  It uses identical front and rear mounted 6 inch woofers and a 0.75 inch front mounted tweeter in a 6 inch wave guide looks like a shallow horn) that serves several purposes.

The loudspeakers are rated down to 25 Hz (below anything live except for huge pipe organs, no subwoofers needed) and up to 40,000 Hz (twice what the human ear is capable of hearing).  Part of this performance is due to built-in Digital Signal Processing (DSP) which uses a smart phone to measure the room and make adjustments.  The DSP also time aligns the two woofers to expand the soundstage.  The DSP includes options for various Mastertunings to satisfy your room/tastes (available on their website).  The DSP also provides loudness control (boosts bass at lower volumes to compensate for the human hearing, something that purists regretfully eliminated decades ago).

The hub allows for coax, optical, two analog (RCA), HDMI-ARC, USB, and WiFi inputs.  It can receive Blu-Tooth, WiFi, Chromecast, and Apple AirPlay.  It is also compatible with WISA (a new standard more popular in Europe).  Buchardt is only sold factory direct but has a good return policy and support.
