Future of Manic Moose MPD Software
« on: 10 Nov 2021, 05:14 pm »
Thought I’d start a thread to consolidate the opinions, experiences and updates to the “Moose “
I know a lot of people use other software control apps in lieu of MM, but I’m holding out hope that there really is a new design in the works! I like to control the output from the app, since I feed directly into my power amp.
What’s everyone expecting for the future of MM?

I would expect the MPD module to be upgraded or replaced with an equivalent (if that is possible).

I really don't expect much in upgrades otherwise.   Do the math.  How many BDPs/3.14/Pi/BR20 are out there?   Lets say there are 10,000 for an illustration.   That means Bryston would of .... or will sell about 1000 units with MM installed per year.    Let's say only $ 100 is allocated for software for each unit (note you can buy pis for $25).   So, on the cost side this would be $10,000/year.    Now if you wanted to get a new version of MM you would need a programmer/developer for a year or more patching together existing software modules in linux. (check out the third party licensing documentation in MM and you will understand).   Now it's $150k one time cost.  That cost would be passed on to the buyer probably over a 5 year period).    I'm going to ignore the revenue side because who knows how much additional revenue they would make (or keep from eroding) with an upgrade.

Now imagine if they built something in house from scrap.    You begin to realize it won't happen since this not Bryston's core competency.   Now you can understand why the competition (hardware) charge 5 times or more for their proprietary system.

Personally,  I hope Bryston keeps it simple.

Sorry for the rant.   Chalk it up to the decade I was in corporate finance...

James in one of his posts, commented on how some of the big streamers have their own apps now (spotify, tidal, apple music, other) - if the new Bryston software would enable us to use those apps to send the music to our Bryston streamer like BR20 - maybe that is the solution instead of there own all encompassing software?

So do I, by leaving Manic Moose alone. It cannot be everything for everybody.

I believe before the pandemic hit Bryston was working on the manic moose replacement, I think it was called Nutty Narwhal. Not sure if that's still in the works or has been abandoned.

It's been so long since it was discussed I can't remember what the main differences were going to be over MM.

Nutty Narwhal is what happens to people who try to use MM?

This is an unfair criticism of Manic Moose considering the amount of time and energy it took to replace it from Nutty Narwal. As far as I am concerned Chis did an excellent job in creating this software. Remember Manic Moose cannot be everything for everybody.

Maybe so.  I use it all the time and it does the job.  But compared to today's interfaces it needs a serious facelift.  Its even more flaky on am iPAD.  Sorry.

Well, i guess we all have a thought or two on the current state of the Moose. I am no exception. It is a bit "DOS Like."

But... in all of this discussion on various threads throughout multiple sites, the thoughts of gbaby have been most profound.

It just gets the job done; simple, stable and most importantly, great sounding. Pretty amazing its upgrades are still supported on all Bryston players back to the first. Won't see that from Apple. Also, designing the new "Nutty" to play nice with so many streaming options (Qobuz, Tidal, Spotify, Amazon, Apple etc) is a daunting task.

So, while looking forward to a one day possible release of the "Nutty," very happy with the Moose.

In  closing, another big shout out to Chris. Having had the pleasure to speak to him on several occasions, he is incredibly enthusiastic, dedicated and a shining example of the second to none customer service offered by the Bryston team.

Enjoy your Sounds,

John

Customer won.  :D

Thanks John. I do appreciate the product, the company and its personnel. My BDP-3 is digital done right. It is my best sounding source for sound using it coupled with the BDA-3. Operating Manic Moose has become intuitive.
