Don't tell my wife... But I think I'd agree with Gilmour to Barrett 8) She's the biggest Syd Barrett fan I know. Which... I seriously love Barrett as well, but Gilmour is my favorite artist of all time - along side Hendrix.

But, the first one that came to mind was actually John Frusciante filling the shoes of Hillel Slovak for the Chili Peppers.

Wow - if my wife had any idea who Syd Barrett was I would be stunned - and delighted! and I agree, Gilmour is the better guitarist by a pretty wide margin.

By far the luckiest was Sir Richard Starkey; while not a singular replacement but love the cross pollination of the Canterbury Scene.........the Clapton/Beck/Page era was interesting as well.

Al Di Meola replacing Bill Connors on guitar in Return to Forever.

Although, later on, after Connors went back to the drawing board on his playing, ended up being a better guitarist.

Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks for Peter Green, Danny Kirwan, Jeremy Spencer, Bob Welch, and Bob Weston.

I loved all the original Fleetwood Mac blues tinged albums, they were in constant rotation on my turntable.
But when Buckingham-Nicks joined the band they became the soundtrack to my life.

I think that (Gilmour for Barrett) made the band into something different. Another one is Midge Ure replacing John Foxx in Ultravox. Basically two different bands but I like both of them. You can also say that the death of Ricky Wilson and the drummer, Keith Strickland, replacing Ricky as the guitarist changed the sound. Same is true for Genesis and Joy Division/New Order.

You can also sort of say David Bowie who had a very different sound depending on his band personnel due to the fact that he brought in sketches of the songs that were filled in by his guitarists and other band members.

Some of the most successful ones (I'm not a big fan of either band) were AC/DC singer replacement and Fleetwood Mac's replacements.

Abrahams to Barre. Tull is nothing without Barre (at least to me).
