OK, so everybody loves the Sonic Impact amplifier.  But has anyone tried their portable speakers?

They use this funky NXT flat-panel technology, that produces sound by exciting a whole flat surface.  If I recall correctly, a year or so ago a bunch of people were impressed by a set of small computer speakers that used the NXT flat panel thing, and those speakers were super cheap and available at K-Mart.  So I was wondering if the sonic impact ones (that sell for next to nothing) might be okay?

The portable speakers also come with a "base unit" that houses a digital amp.  I suspect that this puts out less power than the amp about which everyone is raving - but does anyone know if those smaller amps are using tripath boards as well?  Any idea whether the amp included with the speakers is any good?

I know some guys that played with SI sound pads using Fed Ex shipping cartons and some other semi-rigid materials.  They were impressed with the sound, although they can't go very loud.

I haven't heard the portable speaker/amp combo.  I think I read that the amp in that combo isn't the same as the fabled amp using the TA2024.

I have both amps; the smaller one that comes with the flat panel speakers..and the 'larger' 15w amp.  Only problem is the flat panel sonic impact speakers have the 'mini-plug' and not separate left and right channels so they are not compatible with the bigger 15w SI amp unless I take the plugs off the wires and strip them apart.  I didn't realize the bigger SI amp used spring clips until I got it last week.  Anyone in the market for an SI amp cheap?  New condition- $25.00

Henry is talking about Ed and a buddy of his. After they'd played with 'em a bit Ed sent me a pair of the NXT transducers.

I played with 'em & FedEx boxes for a while. Damn impressive. Couldn't believe what I was hearing from a $20 pair of "cardboard boxes". So good that a roommate picked up a few pairs for a 5 channel FedEx HT setup. I also had a friend over. Played her a Sarah McLaughlin (sp?) song w/out telling her what she was listening to. She was pretty impressed and said that while she's heard that song many a time (turned out to be one of her fav's), had never heard it sound so clear and heard things that she's never heard before.

Then I told her she was listening to the FedEx boxes sitting on the floor...

She didn't quite believe it until I picked up the box and handed it to her while something was playing.

She still wants to replace the speaks in her living room with a pair of NXT's mounted on some foam core. Will have to get to that someday.
