BP-25 D/A converter worthwhiled?
« on: 23 Mar 2005, 05:11 pm »
I’m considering upgrading my BP-25, by adding the D/A converter card.  I’ve had little listening exposure with this setup.  I’d like to hear all opinions from fellow Bryston owners on this topic.

Thanks in advance
Dave

I'd like to hear from those who have tried this DAC as well. I am seriously considering it; so far i have only one (very positive) review to go on.

Bear in kind that you can buy a Benchmark DAC1 for the same money.

Have you actually listened to both of these? I must have missed the post where you compared them head-to-head.

The Inner Ear review of the BP25DA compares the Bryston DAC favourably to the Audio Aero Capitole. I haven't seen anyone do that for the Benchmark. However, I have read Srajan Ebaen's 6moons.com review of the DAC1 and he was not kind. If you are going on price alone, you should factor in the extra set of cables you would need for the Benchmark; I think you need to factor in the effect of those extra cables on the sound as well - depending of course on how much you are willing to spend on cables to get the same quality of data transmission as an internal circuit would give you.

Based on your other posts, I am coming to the conclusion that you are bent on trashing the Bryston DAC. Have you actually audtioned it? You are creating a lot of headwind for people (moi, for example) who are seriously interested in this DAC and you need to start backing up your opinions with your experiences.

I don't recall ever having commented on it before either positively or negatively. I think you must be thinking of someone else.

That's okay. :)

(And my original comment wasn't actually "trashing" the Bryston upgrade either, I was merely pointing out that there are external DACs available for the price of the upgrade that are quite well thought of in some quarters, and one should consider both possibilities).
