It seems that the preference for dual subs is to have them outside the mains, set back a touch... is there a reason for this?
Would inside work just as well?

Yes either is fine.  I actually prefer the subs to be as aligned to the main drivers as possible.  Outside or inside the speakers doesn't seem to matter much.

Mine are on the outside, and they sound amazing.   Bass wraps all around the listening positions.

Depends where you are crossing over on the frequency.  The higher the crossover point the more location sensitive they will be

It's hard to tell from the photo, but the baffles are 3' away from the wall.   I'm trying not to get them too close to the left/right seating positions.   I'll play around with the placement some more once I get my Odyssey amp and finish building the A/V-1RS surrounds.

Actually, from the picture I just posted, I could move the subs out a bit more to align the baffles with the X-Statics.   Of course, then I'd have to move the servo amps under the speaker cables for the X-Statics because the 6' power cords that came with them wouldn't be long enough.   I suppose that's a good excuse to pick up some GR Research power cords in 7' or 8' lengths.
