Glad I found this site.

This is to introduce myself, an ex-audio hobbyist jumping back into the fray. I've been bitten by the build your own speakers bug and hope to learn what's necessary from the forum.  I've got lots to learn on the electronics side of the hobby and look forward to learning from forum members.  Thanks for reading, Dan.

  • To whom more was given more will be required.
    • Never go to a psychiatrist, adopt a straycat or dog. On the street they live only two years average.

Welcome to the AC,
It's nice to welcome a fellow speaker builder.  Speaking of; the DIY hybrid ESL's shown below are not for the faint-hearted ($1k in mateirals and 120+ hours labor) but they are top-tier in every respect.  If you're interested; PM me and I will send you the drawings and parts list.
Enjoy the AC!

Welcome Dan!

The most advanced loudspeakers currently available use active design, waveguides, and DSP to produce best possible imaging/soundstage with proper room interaction.  Look a Dutch & Dutch 8C, Buchardt A500, Kali IN-8, and Kii 3 as examples.  The engineering that goes into such products takes heavy R&D and goes miles beyond what hobbyists or one man shops can possibly come up with.

Suggest also reading Floyd Toole's "Sound Reproduction" (either edition) to learn how loudspeakers interact with rooms.  Toole is well respected for the research he did at the Canadian (National) Research Council and with Harmon International.  What you'll find is that bass peaks/dips can exceed 25 dB and multiple subwoofers is the best solution.  And as we all know the best location for generating bass is corners/walls (opposite of the best location for generating mids/highs).

Thank you all for the welcome. Jazzman, that's an impressive ESL.  With a knob it could be used as a door, a twofer so to speak. No pun intended.

Welcome. Rule #1 keep it simple but not simpler. A two way or single driver are not complicated. Simple crossover or non at all. Unless you desire planars or electrostatics. You would have more options of Amps as well. Have fun trying.

Welcome, I am also looking into DIY speakers and I’m sure I’ll find more than I need on AC.
