Hi all,

I am looking for a DAC chip/device that would allow an analog voltage to control the output level, to maintain full bit resolution while changing the volume.
(-48dB software attenuation means we are back to 16 bits...?)
It is important to me because I will try to build a combined preamp and crossover filter, connected directly to the power amps of an active speaker system.
I got a suggestion about the Analog Devices AD1853, which apparently can do this.
Now, this feature is not the only requirement (24bit, ≥192k, good specs..), but an important one.
Have anyone of you any experience of the AD1853? Does it have good sonic qualities?
Can it be recommended for a hi end system?

I think you're better off using a high end stereo DAC in front with no attenuation to drive your DIY preamp/XO which has an analog multichannel volume control that you can control with a hobby controller like Arduino, etc.

Or all analog

DEQX preamp/DAC/XO will also fill the bill if you want to buy something rather than DIY. It has the advantage of offering FIR DSP for linear phase filters. It has analog output attenuation and is truly high end multichannel DAC and preamp.
